Now i am not a fan of cleaning bikes so never rubbed the harpic into the exhaust using a brush or let is wark away eating any crud. I put put it into a scotch pad and rubbed away for a couple of minutes. Instant results what i am quite impressed with. i washed them down after with soapy water so hopefully i wont wake up in the morning to orange pipes.

In my experience they'll be fine as long as you don't start the bike. Harpic didn't touch the mess on my speed triple downpipes. Wire brush in a drill did the job though.
Have used harpic in the past with good results, just have to neutralise it with baking soda type of thing.
