Maybe, but I'm always dubious about the supposed ability of everyone to ride at speed safely and be aware of all the things necessary for that whilst simultaneously being unable to spot the bright yellow cameras/vans or red signs.

Doubly so with the 'my speed just crept up' line of argument, which always implies to me you're not aware of how fast you're going.

Vans and fixed cameras are easy, the camera motorcycle around my way hides his bike on peoples driveways, and stands behind whatever available shrubbery there is to conceal him

I use the auto speed limit function on my car, it reads the signs for you. Mostly 'cause I'm too lazy to try and keep my foot in one place.

I did 130 miles odd Sunday and as usual I'm picking off cars doing 45 in the 60s almost constantly, then you hit the next village and trundle through at 30 and they are up your chuff as they are still doing 40 odd. Likewise the car you caught up with on entry to the village has buggered off into the distance at auto pilot 40 mph. I've also noticed some who actually speed up when they get to built up areas presumably as they are more comfortable driving in urban environments. Nuts.

I overtook 2 cars on the outside, between traffic and a hairpin and just laughed.

Best part, I was on a bicycle. They never caught up again.

I've got a lot of sympathy for people not wanting cars or bikes speeding through where they live. It's such a small consideration to stick to the speed limit on a tiny fraction of the roads in the country that and a very modest ask from those who live there.

I bimble slowly on the bike through villages and then gently increase speed once out of the limits (absolutely pin it to the redline through tunnels). Same in the car. Too many people drive too fast in my local area, and it is becoming quite scary. I'd happily have a community watch team here.

Filly wouldn't let me post the question: "Do you choose to travel at 20 where other people live?"

Our high street is a 20 zone, has been for 3 or so years, it's shit.
If you're a sensible driver you'd only do 20 down it anyway, even when it was a 30 as it's narrow, parked cars, peds everywhere etc etc, so no gain in safety, if you're a barryboy you ignore it just as you did when it was a 30, so again no reduction in the amount of speeders.

Same in our village. Some people just ignore speed limits, others ignore parking restrictions. No one checks, so they flout the rules with impunity.

Ye, I hear the " what if it was your village " but you can very safely break speed limits a bit, almost by mistake,

1974.. with my dad in his company car Avenger, blasting across the fens at Warp Factor Stupid (or what passes for it in an Avenger). We come up to a very small village where it appeared the road went straight through so he didn't lift.
Problem #1: The road actually curved to the left a bit, but the buildings on the right were in a straight line.
Problem #2: The road had recently been resurfaced & was covered in loose chippings.
Dads initial comment: "Bugger!"
Hilarious outcome: He steered to the left & the back end came around a bit as we passed though the village like Roger Clark causing all the homes on the right side of the road to be blasted with loose chippings
Dad's next comment: "oops"

about a mile later: "Don't tell your mum..."

We've all done 80+++ on our bikes on 60s and felt very safe, yep junctions need care but generally we're happy.

Speed isn't the main issue for me, it dangerous driving like risky overtakes, not looking forward, pissing about with phones or in car gadgets.

Leaving our village the 40 drags on a bit to the national. Everyone's up to 50/60 and seems pretty safe to me. The 20s in Wales are a joke, nobody does 20 in my experience, including buses and ambulances.

Once upon a time speed limits'were set to IIRC the 80th percentile, ie the speed that 80% of the people stayed within. If speed limits were set like that we would have a lot less problems and speed limits would be more likely to be obeyed.
