We used to have comedians that told jokes, then Ben Elton introduced political satire and it was never the same again!

I'm pretty sure Ben Elton didn't invent political satire.Taipan wrote: Fri Sep 26, 2025 11:11 amWe used to have comedians that told jokes, then Ben Elton introduced political satire and it was never the same again! But humour, of most kinds, keeps things lighter!

But they're rarely actually even amusing, not even slightly. They're mostly someone being a bit fucking bitchy to someone else.

Elton and his like are sort of indignant instead of funny.Taipan wrote: Fri Sep 26, 2025 11:11 amWe used to have comedians that told jokes, then Ben Elton introduced political satire and it was never the same again! But humour, of most kinds, keeps things lighter!

On a related note, this old pub staff note is sort of funny but I won’t be offended if nobody laughs out loud.

Re: Jokes Thread
Dealing room culture is the same.
We still have 'Pointless Pete' (never gets to the point of a conversation), 'Shaky' (he has epilepsy, but loves the name), 'Porkchop' (Muslim, ditto), 'Quavers' (he has microtia of the ear and thus it resembles a Quaver crisp)... I could go on.

Re: Jokes Thread
Is it bitchy or just piss taking? For me being in the pub was always ripping the piss out of each other and laughing at complete bollocks, cos the drink made unfunny things funny!
Thats the trouble with forums I suppose, you can only read what is written and not how its said...

Re: Jokes Thread
I could not stand Ben Elton. Did he not force himself on us with appearances in The Young Ones or was he on something before that. Saturday Night Live? Alexei Sayle was another annoying twat from around thew same time.

Re: Jokes Thread
I thought so too but Dictionary sez 'not really'
dwarf /dwörf/
noun (pl dwarfs or (rare) dwarves)
The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.

We were fine until she told me she was Christian.
"Do you have a problem with religion?"
No, that was her name before the operations.
