The problem is caused by low temperature washing, constantly doing washes at 30º or 40º.

In the absence of those products (we use 'em monthly I think) - run an empty machine, with washing powder/liquid and a water softener tablet if you've got 'em at the highest temperature on a decent length cycle. We occasionally do that too. (I'll check with my 'washing machine technician'. ).

Also, check the trap/drain thing at the bottom of the machine. Might be some crut in there.
I generally use 40 degrees for clothes, but sheets and towels at 60 - so it gets at least one hot wash each week (never had an issue with the old machine but I'd had that from new and never had animal hair to deal with :D :D ). But I don't know what the previous tenants did !!

I'll have a go at a hot empty wash and check the trap thingy

I've checked with Wozzy Tech and she does a 90º cycle once a month with water softener only and a Dettol type cleanse every 3 months. We never use 'biological' washing powders/liquids either.

I'd say check the trap, pull out the dispenser and give it a wash and, ASAP, get a bottle of the machine cleaner. Dettol and Dr Beckmann (not Dr Oetker  I think that's biscuits, pizza etc) work  Bosch and others do them too.

I have a small dishwasher in my apartment in Courchevel.

I've literally, never switched it on, even when there was two of us living there !!

Downside here is that the kitchen is set up for the dishwasher - there are two sinks and neither a normal size for a bowl :(

I will go and see if I can find a bottle of one of those. I never use biological - normally the cheapest, most basic type of washing powder and half what they 'say' should be used (I buy the tablets normally and they are supposed to go two per wash - but I nevber used to have a completely filled machine and nothing was Really dirty, so I only ever used one tab!!)

Thanx :) :)

Oh...and if you do open the trap thingy at the bottom, try and get a tray under it and just crack it open a little to start with. (He says with the voice of bitter experience  ).

Oh yes, I've done that before

I did put a large towel down, no space for a tray (if I had one!!)

Also also: clean out the dispenser tray (they usually unclip).

In the sink, hot water and scrub off accumulated crud*
