It's the final NG meeting of the year this weekend, and a big one for the club as it's at Castle Combe , which has very strong historical and current links with the club, and it incorporates the "King of Combe" sort of championship in a weekend there with decent prize money, which Charlie Nesbitt cleared off in last year- he's not here this year ( is doing the "Stars of Darley), but there are a few other big names there this year, not all of them racing - as far as I can gather, Max is, Scotty and Hillier are I think just out in the Parades and generally mooching about for selfies and autographs, ( and in one case I imagine flogging his cowboy hats and other merch :D )

Image

It's always a very well attended one in terms of entries, and without doubt the biggest one of the year in terms of spectators, which certainly last year , despite me feeling very uncomfortable with the actual track, and not having my best meeting, there was a definite buzz about and it was a really good do.
They always have a " Parade" class at this one, for which you don't need an ACU licence, and just get to ride whatever bike round for a session or three in front of the crowds, and if it was like last year, there were some really interesting and special bikes out in that 8-)

In terms of my racing, as I've previously mentioned, my championship is done and dusted, no one can catch me, but what I didn't realise until a few days ago was that I'm in contention for an additional annual Championship, namely the "Gerry Gardner Trophy" which is awarded each season to the rider who has finished the season with the most points in a single championship- although I am currently leading that , and 🤞🏻 can clinch it this weekend, there are eight others who could also win it , so I need to finish every race in a half decent position to be sure- I've knocked up a little xls to help me easily work out where we all are as the weekend progresses :1

Image

So it's still all to play for for me this weekend, I know that I can go quicker around there than I did last year and you can bet I'm going to be trying-I want 75 points this weekend!
The weather is looking perfect , and there is a Naked Streetbike / Golden Era Superbike gang BBQ in the paddock saturday night , can't wait.

Anyway, that's it for now, more to follow next week, but suffice to say, if you're at a loose end this weekend and make it there, please come and say hello and eat some of our biscuits and cakes.
All being well, I'll be down in the front row of the paddock just along from the Help for Heroes lot.

And now I'm off to pack the van and we'll be trundling down there this afternoon - I love race weekends! :banana-wrench:

Castle Combe round has now been and gone, and what a round it was, one way and another.
It was probably the busiest NG round of the year, which I guess isn't really that surprising considering that it's effectively NG's home round with some extra spice and prize money for the "King of Combe," which always attracts a few BSB riders. Having those extra spectators there really does make a difference from my perspective, too.

They also have a " Parade" class at the Combe meeting, which for anyone who doesn't know, it is a non-competitive track time class open to non-ACU licence holders as well as ACU that you "enter" a couple of months before the meeting, and basically get three 15 minute sessions over the Sat/Sunday to blat atound the track on whatever bie you choose.
There were a few interesting bikes out there this year, including this one- Sete Gibernau's 2006 season Ducati Desmosedici -quite possibly the LOUDEST bike I have ever heard

Image

Some cool 60s and 70s 2-stroke race bikes that I never got pics of, and Trevor Nation's 1990 Norton rotary, and the latest (current) derivative of it.
Image
Image
Image

James Hillier was out on Trevor Nation's old bike in the parade sessions, wringing its neck and wheelying it all the way from Camp to Avon Rise, dead cool 8-)
Image

Trevor himself was also there, but nothing to do with Norton/Crighton, he was racing along with the rest of us NG lot on a GSXR1000
There were a few other current and ex-BSB / GP racers milling about over the weekend, too, including Scott Redding and Max Cook, and one or two of the current SuperSport and SuperStock racers in the Open/King of Combe races too.

Anyway, on to my racing.
Due to Combe's restrictions on the number of bikes they can have on track on non-race permit days, the usual friday test day was split into two, giving you a total of 3 x 15 minute sessions, which isn't a lot, but is more than the BSB F900 and Sportbike boys get, and TBH, although after last year's Combe round I felt I definitely needed a lot more time there to really get comfortable and properly on the pace, this year I felt more comfortable there from the off, and by the end of Friday, I felt that I had sussed a couple of key areas, and was looking forward to race day.
And although I didn't really need to (as they've only done half a season :-) ), I treated the bike to a new pair of SportSmarts and also whacked some new (Goldfren S33 compound) front pads in too- although I was feeling much better about the circuit than I did last year, I was conscious of the fact that pretty much all of my competitors have done a lot more laps around there than I have, and I need some wins here to be in with a chance of the Gerry Gardner Trophy.

We (the Naked Streetbike class), were again sharing the grid, and therefore qualifying, with the Golden Era Superbikes (ZX7Rs, YZF750s, 750SRADs, early Blades and Millies etc) , and were also once again the first race on the programme.
This meant we were first out for our allocated practice session at 08:40 on Saturday, and then qualifying just after 10:00. It was a bit cold and overcast first thing, but it was dry, and practice went well; the bike was feeling lovely and crisp in the slightly cold temps.
Qualifying came around very quickly and out I went, but |I only managed 3 or 4 laps and the bike was dying like it was running out of fuel, but there was plenty in there. I made it back to the pits, and it seemed to be running normally, so I took the cap out of the tank and blew through the vents, and when I went to inspect the in-line filter between the tap and the carbs, I discovered the problem- the piece of fuel pipe between the tap and filter was deforming when it got hot.

Image

This pic doesn't really show it, but when in place above a hot engine, the slight bend was just collapsing. I replaced it with some much more substantial thick-walled pipe, did my usual nut and bolt, oil & fuel, and tyre pressure re-checks, and waited for my first race to come around.
My problems in qualifying had meant that I was 3 seconds off pole and a fair way further back on the grid than I had hoped to be in 20th, but looking on the bright side, that was still 8th Bandit and 1st Veteran, albeit only just- by 0.04 secs :-)

The lights went out in Race1, I got away well but missed a gear from 3rd to 4th which made it seem like all the bikes around me had a turbo button and I arrived at Quarry in about 25th place, which turned out to be not a bad thing, as it was carnage- Scott, one of the younger Bandit-eers had ended up arriving there far too fast, took to the grass and lost it with his bike flying across the kerbs, snashing the crankcase and ripping the (compulsary) GB Racing cover and ignigition pickup cover clean off along, doing a with a load of other damage and disappointingly deposing a load of oil across the track, so it was back to the gazebo whle they cleared that up

Image

Image

At the restart, I got a decent start, but unfortunately spent just about the whole race fighting a ZX7R- the quick guys on the Goldens really aren't an issue as they just disappear into the distance, but there are a good few of them who aren't that fast, and at a fast track like Combe where on a Bandit you are flat out in 6th for a good 5-10 secs or more it can be so frustrating, and in fact this was without doubt my most frustrating race to date. They absolutely smoke Bandits on the straights, but I honestly nearly hit this particular one on more than one occasion. And so it went for the whole race- I was lapping quicker than him, but due to the layout of the track, I couldn't make a pass stick. It meant that my 2024 nemesis was putting rude moves on me and biting at my heels the whole race, but in the end it didn't matter as I still crossed the line in front of him, albeit less than half a second, but that was 18th overall, 5th Bandit only 1 sec slower laptimes than the 2nd to 4th Bandits and most importantly 1st Vet so 25 points, so job done, yay!

My second of the three races was far more enjoyable- despite getting a shit start, I made up a fair bit at Quarry, the hard braking first corner, overtaking 3 or 4, one of which was the road-block ZX7 from race 1, and then set about hunting down the two Bandit Vets that were in front of me. Within three or so laps, I'd got by them both, and really starting to actually love the circuit- what a change from last season.
I crossed the line 14th on the road, 6th Bandit and 1st Vet, and I was lapping in the 1:21s (my best race laps last year were low 1:23s), so dead happy with that 8-)
And that result, coupled with my nearest Gerry Gardner Trophy rival having an off and DNF in his second race meant that I couldn't now be caught- well, by my calcs at least....🤞🏻

My third and final race came around, and although I thought that I got a decent start, Lee Davies (one of my main Vet rivals and the one on No 65 in the pic below) came absolutely flying past me (this isn't the pic of him doing it BTW, just the only Combe pic I have of him and me in the same shot :D )

Image

He was 4 places behind me on the grid, so he really had got a flyer (I and he found out at the end of the race that he also got a 10-second penalty for a jump start :o ), and he really was on a mission. He's previously beaten me at Pembrey once, and we battled hard in the Anglesey races, but he's only got the better of me once to date, and for pretty much that whole last race it was nip and tuck, and we must have changed places ten times or more, absolutely cracking fun!
This race wasn't without incident, one rider went down right in front of me while I was battling with Keiran Barker, Keiran ran over the fallen rider's leg which pitched him over the bars, and I nearly caught him too. Seeing the violence of it, I was convinced there would be a red flag and throttled off, for a couple to steam past me, but no red shown so I was back on it and after Lee.
The last lap he put a hard (but fair IMO- that's what racing is about) move on me into the esses, and although it didn't matter to me points-wise in any of my championships, I was determined that he wasn't going to have this one so I hung back very slighlty down the back straight, got a run on him through Bobbies- it was obvious from the way he was riding that he was expecting a move from me and he kept right going into the (horrible, bikes only with one tiny line only) final rectacell chicane.
I kept it pinned until he stood on the brakes, and shot past him up the left-hand side, somehow making it through without crashing and crossing the line in front of him first Vet, and 3rd Bandit :banana-dance:

It was a brilliant last race, and even though I'd got the better of him with what was arguably a semi-rude move, which I thought he might be pissed at that, he was buzzing still, and we had a great cool-down lap with him bouncing his poor old ( very fast) Bandit off the rev-limiter at every crowd and marshall post
All in all, a great weekend, and that's pretty much it for my season

Image

I was seriously considering doing the annual Lydden " Sidecar Burn-up" meeting next weekend, as a number of the DesmoDue boys are doing it, I have good memories of Lydden, ang I think it would be fun on a Bandit.
But other life things do ( sometimes :1 ) take prescidence over racing, so I can't, so thats it in terms of on-track stuff for me this year, but I will do a final season roll-up stats report of my year, and what my thoughts/plans for next year are for anyone interested after the awards dinner/piss-up do at Stanbrook Abbey on 15th Nov, at which I should hopefully find out whether I definitely won the Gerry Gardner! :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Thanks everyone, and @Supermofo we definitely won't see each other at Snett next year, as it's been bumped in favour of Thruxton, which is a real coup for NG- it's the week after the BSB round there, and the only other bike race meeting there next year, am especially looking forward to that one 8-)

Next year's calendar below- assuming all goes to plan, in addition to all the NG rounds, I'll also do whatever Darley Moor and Aintree meetings I can fit in, and now I've got my National licence, it means I can enter Aberdare too, that's definitely on my list

Yep, I have to say I am now an NG fan, and they are without doubt my favourite of the bigger 3 (Bemsee, NG and NL) - They are arguably not as big /slick/ corporate as Bemsee but still well organised and get the stuff that needs to be got right, right. Decent down to earth experienced and responsive people who love the sport, and are very family-values sort of oriented.
I'm a member of NL, but it's not my sort of club really, seems to attract people that I consider, um, a bit different to me, and it also seems to have a largely Northern (ie north of Midlands) membership, so understandley they do more far northern circuits.

Well, we've just got back from the NG Awards event at Stanbrook Abbey last night, and I have to say, was a great night.
Fabulous location, good food, loads of laughs and shit dancing, no doubt assisted by more beer and wine than I've drunk for a while – I made it onto the front of the programme too, albeit a pretty dull choice of pic IMO!

Image

It was a top night, Charlie Nesbitt was the man handing out the awards, and I came away with three, including the Gerry Gardner "Champion of Champions" which I am so chuffed to have won :banana-dance:

Image

Image

Yeah, I know it's a bottom rung class I've been racing in , against mainly other old has or never-was-beens and hot-headed young uns on ancient slow cobbled together shopping bikes, but I've had an absoloute ball doing it, can't wait to get back out there, and the part I am most proud of, and that won the Gerry Gardner for me, was that I haven't had a single DNF all season ( I didn't last season either) , and AFAIK I am the only person in any of the classes who can say that this season at least, and maybe last too 😎

I've probably jinxed myself for next season by saying that, I suppose the mathematicians amongst us would say that's bollocks but the laws of probabilities say that it's unlikely I'll be able to repeat that for a third consequtive season, but, well we'll see eh.
So, my racing summary for this year is as follows:
  • Total races entered = 30
  • Total races finished = 30
  • No of 1st place finishes = 19
  • No of 2nd place finishes = 7
  • No of 3rd place finishes = 2
And the other two were 4th , so not a bad season IMO

Anyway, was an absoloutely briliant night which didn't finish until 2am today, and had so many people who I'd never met before coming up and congratulating me ( none on my dancing, it has to be said) , which gave me a lovely feeling 🥰

Image

Image

As for next season, I'm definitely committed to continuing with NG, and they've confirmed that the LNSB and all other classes I'm potentially interested in are continuing, (some with minor tweaks and a new one for 13-17 year olds which is brilliant news IMO), my only current slight dilemma is whether to continue with the Bandits in the LNSB class (TBH it's the only class 600 Bandits are competitive in ) , or try my luck with a different bike in another class, or classes.... :hmmm:

The easy, and most sensible option is to stick with my current Bandits.
On the plus side, I have absoloutely loved riding them- they certainly are a hell of a lot better on a track than I thought they would be
Yeah, they are heavy and not fast , but that's part of it for me- my old-man brain doesn't work so fast these days, and 600 Bandits in a race situation go plenty fast enough to be exciting for me.
I have also, of course, got to know the bikes and fellow Banditeers well, by and large they are a great bunch, I have some great mates in the class now, and I of course have pretty much everything I need. It would also be the lowest cost, and lowest risk option – the Dunlop control tyres last almost forever, bikes are available for next to no money, and proper racing really doesn't get any cheaper.

On the other side of the coin however, the size of our grids have been dwindling, and it would be good to have some more new blood to go at.
But I think I know what I want out of my racing well enough now , and it isn't really to move up the bike ladder as it were, as it is for most of the ( admittedly younger than me) people who race Bandits , and I definitely don't want to be spending £500-£1k+ on tyres every meeting , which realistically is what I would be doing to be competitive on a 600 or 1000 Supersport bike.
And my old man hips, knees and back mean that the naked / flat-barred type bikes suit me much better, so I've pretty much come to the decision that if I do move classes, it will be to the (non-Lightweight) main Naked Streetbike class, or something similar.

The bike to have in this class for the last season or two is undoubetly a Street Triple 765RS, but the likes of Christian Smith, the Clearys and Harley also go well on F900s, and there is one bloke an an 890R Duke who's always up in the top 5 too, so one of those three would be the sensible choice- F900s also open up other options at other clubs, and of course BSB, not that I have a desire to go there though!
As it is currently, the NG NSB class regs limit 4 cyl bikes to up to 950cc , 3 cylinder can be up to 900cc and twins up to 1000cc, with an absoloute class limit max of 134bhp, but they're keen to have as many different bikes in class as possible and have already en approval for someone else and said that they'd wave the 950cc 4 cyl limit for a 1200 Bandit , and that has got me thinking.

It of course doesn't have the suspension / handling or tech of the any of above mentioned bikes, and is a heavy old bus, but it's no heavier than a 600 Bandit which can be made to handle and stop reasonably well within the rules, and so hopefully that should also be true for the 1200. Most of the 600 parts (rear shock, rearsets, bodywork etc ) are the same so go straight on, and with a pipe and carb fettle the 1200 has an easily attainable and reliable 120+ HP - my thinking is that extra 40-50hp over a 600 has to be worth a good few seconds a lap, and if it did, that would put me in amongst them.
And as a brucey bonus, retro-fitted quickshifters / blippers are allowed in this class too, so it would get a QS
There is no control tyre in this class so, yup, it would undoubtedly increase my tyre bill, but (with the exception of the DesmoDues) so would any other class, and slicks are permitted which would hopefully keep the costs managable.- I would possibly look at buying scrubs off 600 BSB boys.
The other option that would also be worth consideration is running a V2 Tuono in the class, which wouldn't even need special approval, or perhaps a Fazer 1000, assuming it got the over-capacity approval too.

Anyway, food for thought.
If someone came along and wanted to buy one of or both my current 600 Bandits and associated spares etc, that would definitely help me make up my mind.
The reality is that there are a fair few out there for sale, and not that many buyers as far as I can see, but you never know I suppose- in fact, if any of you old feckers fancy giving it a go, I'll be at every NG round next year, of course know the bikes inside out and would be available to give advice (FWIW) and help out as part of the package, so could be a nice relatively stress-free way to go racing :-)
I'm not really expecting any takers on here, but if you or anyone you know has that sort of hankering, let me know!

And in the meantime, both bikes will be getting a full service, and I think I'll also fit a nose fairing to TB, as it was originally an "S" so has the headstock bracket, and I have an unused fibreglass one in the loft ( that's got to be worth half a second or so at the faster tracks) , but I'm starting to feel the effects of last night now, so enough typing, time for a shower to wake myself up a bit and perhaps little hair of the dog before dinner! :D

600 Bandit with an 884 big bore engine, better still an 884 big bore GSXR750 engine for the stronger cam chain and better cylinder head, though a complete 1200 Bandit would probably be cheaper, you might be able to squeeze a 1200 Bandit engine into a 600, but I think it will be tight.

:D - Your regular old-man rivet-counter 80s/90s posts do make me smile, most of the time, anyway ;)

Anyway basically, completely NO to either of your suggestions
Even if you could still buy the JE pistons that TTS used to use for the 884 conversions ( I am pretty good at old-man rivet-counting too when I choose to :) ), why on earth would you even consider it? 1200 Bandits are cheap as chips, the motors are arguably stronger and almost undoubtedly more reliable than a cored out 600 or 750, and they just work straight out of the box, as it were, with very little set-up required.

But it's irrelevant anyway as 884 conversions (and pretty much any other engine mods) are banned , the whole ethos of the Naked Streetbike classes is affordable racing, hence there are strict tech regs, and both your suggestions would be illegal.
