I watch it in native language with subtitles. Dubbed versions are always dire!

Yeah, I don't think it really mattered when we all had pokey little CRT's, but with telly's nowadays it's really obvious and jarring when the mouth doesn't match the words.

Re: Box Sets, Mini series, films, etc.
You should try watching stuff like The Simpsons dubbed into French. It's not just that the mouths don't match the words, the voices are all wrong.
So, with English sub-titles, the whole experience is actually better with the sound off!
(Dunno if things have changed but, rather than use sub-titles, the French always seemed determined that all forrin stuff got dubbed. Something to do with the 'cultural imperative' or some such thing).

Alice in Borderland, they've kinda lost the plot with that now and it's lost it's edge.
Line of Duty. Not sure why i'd never seen this before, but that was spot on.

That'll probably be down to the old Toubon law they have on their books.Count Steer wrote: Thu Oct 02, 2025 11:06 am (Dunno if things have changed but, rather than use sub-titles, the French always seemed determined that all forrin stuff got dubbed. That's the one. Often referred to as the cultural imperative (whatever that is in FrenchMrLongbeard wrote: Thu Oct 02, 2025 11:15 amThat'll probably be down to the old Toubon law they have on their books.Count Steer wrote: Thu Oct 02, 2025 11:06 am (Dunno if things have changed but, rather than use sub-titles, the French always seemed determined that all forrin stuff got dubbed. There's some bizarre stuff in there ie foreign expressions are allowed but must be accompanied by a French one. So they have to say stuff twice! Mon Dieu.

Fantastic 4 First Steps, Marvel back to their best, lovely styling and a nice end of credits.

Not seen it yet, however recently I tried to watch Captain America: Brave New World. Gave it 30mins and gave up.MingtheMerciless wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 8:26 pm Fantastic 4 First Steps, Marvel back to their best, lovely styling and a nice end of credits.
I also watched Thunderbolts. I got to the end, but it took two sittings.
I did enjoy Predator: Killer of Killers, it's animation, but for a mature audience (it's quite violent).

Sat through BNW but it was rubbish, can't be arsed with Thunderbolts and Predator K of K was very good IMO.KungFooBob wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 8:31 pmNot seen it yet, however recently I tried to watch Captain America: Brave New World. Do not bother with Mickey 17, bloody awful film and not a touch on the book.

I read the book a couple of weeks back, the sequel is sat on the desk ready to read once I've finished Golden Son.MingtheMerciless wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 8:51 pmSat through BNW but it was rubbish, can't be arsed with Thunderbolts and Predator K of K was very good IMO.KungFooBob wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 8:31 pmNot seen it yet, however recently I tried to watch Captain America: Brave New World. I'm still waiting for @Sunny 's review of Alien: Earth, now they're all available to binge watch.

oh Alien E is definitely worth a watch. Mrs M who is normally quite cynical of my fondness for sci-fi liked it, it's not the sort of show you enjoy but glad you make it to the end without dying.

I liked it. I'm really not into 'horror' type stuff but love Sci-Fi, Alien Earth was mostly just the right mix of existential horror and Sci-fi. There were a few bits that were a bit borderline too scary for me, but it balanced out well enough.
It also made me buy Mob Rules on vinyl (Dio is so much better than Ozzy vocally), all the music was excellent.

Finished watching it half an hour ago!KungFooBob wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 8:55 pm I'm still waiting for @Sunny 's review of Alien: Earth, now they're all available to binge watch.
I really enjoyed it, especially the mix of other aliens (the Octop-eye was great
I did think the very end was a bit weak, and far too much of a 'to be continued'. On reflection I think I wanted more significant character death. And to see Octop-eye Arthur.
Muz (who's a massive Aliens fan) found it all a bit dull, which surprised me. And the cross-fades really annoyed him
I'm the same - love sci-fi and zombie films, but general horror stuff isn't my scene.KungFooBob wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 9:06 pm I liked it. Agreed on the music too - it really was all excellent, all the way through. Best soundtrack I've heard for a long while. Pearl Jam's 'Animal' to end was a great touchKungFooBob wrote: Fri Oct 03, 2025 9:06 pm It also made me buy Mob Rules on vinyl (Dio is so much better than Ozzy vocally), all the music was excellent.

I think I'm of a similar mind, each episode was OK to good, but the series overall was disappointing and felt like it lacked something.

Kneecap. On Amazon Prime.
I now understand the background of the group (it's a dramatised film, but...), loved the Trainspotting nod, and appear to be their newest fan

Re: Box Sets, Mini series, films, etc.
Just bought the complete Deep Space 9 on DVD.
(The missus has been watching it on Sky Mix - almost at the end of Series 4 and the adverts are doing my head in
).
Also, scrolling through the umpteen channels of dreck on Freesat I noticed The Dark Tower was being shown on one channel so have recorded it. Having just read The Gunslinger and got the next 2 books from the library I wondered if the film made more sense

Steve.
Starring Cillian Murphy.
On Netflix.
It's about a residential school for teens, and teachers, with issues. Based on a book that I haven't read, but probably will now.
On reflection it felt quite brief. But I thought it was excellent.
It felt like the kind of place my brother would go to occasionally to give my parents some respite.
