I'm more than happy with village life, which is why Weston under Penyard ticked all my boxes, but last night it came up and i got a "fuck no"... so i think that one is out
I'm off over that way today for more coaching for the boy so may view something else.

This place doesn't feature in the 'Surrey most expensive' lists. It's not Virginia Water, Oxshott, West Horsley, Send, Cobham or Stoke D'Abernon or even Shere y'know! Sure there are lots of umpteen million places (some rea££y eye-watering ones 'up the hill') but there are lots of quite modest houses in the mix...like mine .
Having said that, the £450k sort of thing in the FoD for a 4 bed place wouldn't get you a 2 bed bungalow...but, that's most of Surrey and huge chunks of the SE for you really.

Filly's BiL has trouble sleeping. Last three places they've lived met the criteria for 'quiet', including out in the countryside, "no white line down the middle of the road", etc.
Quietest place they lived? End of a cul-de-sac on the edge of a town. No tractors at 5am - no-one started a car until after 8am!
I'm of an age where access to medical stuff is more important. However, if you're much younger, go for the other needs now.
I'm spoiled a bit where I live. There are miles of woods/countryside either side of the village for walking/cycling ( I hate cycling but for those that don't), its a minutes walk from my front door to the woods that go unbroken all the way passed Broxbourne Woods a good 5-7 miles away. It's a village with a good sense of community, 4 good pubs within short walking distance, a corner shop open early/late and it's 40 mins walk/5 mins drive into town and to a mainline into Liverpool St which takes less than an hour. Then there's 2 big hospitals in 20 mins drive in either direction, easy to get cabs etc It's the main reason we haven't moved in 20 years. We'd like somewhere bigger but that means either a lot more money here or move further out and lose a lot of the plus points. Whilst the kids are young I think we'll be staying put, especially once at school/uni leaving ages this location has a lot of plus points.
Ideally once the kids have gone we'll probably go rural Essex/Suffolk somewhere. Even then though I think 2 pubs is sort of a must in case 1 is a bit Royston Vasey. We don't go to the pub much, but a good pub is a good thing to have. Even here when we first went in our local we got the tumble weed/looks!

I moved from Wembley, so here was deathly silent...at first. We didn't get deer barking all through the night, or owls calling in the woods though! That deer bark can sound a bit like someone being murdered at times! I often think if someone is murdered 50m into the woods I'll ignore it thinking it's a muntjac

My daughter lives in a village with her other half who has always lived there. He is like a kid at Xmas when he comes to ours as he can order any takeaway he wants! Where they live there is only a chippy, kebab shop, Chinese and Indian that do takeaways but I don't think any of them deliver? Probably the only times we have takeaways is when they are at ours. Nowt against takeaways as such, but apart from the occasional post pub kebab, they're not really on our radar. If we don't want to cook i'd refer to go out to eat rather than have food delivered?
Very rarely get cabs/UBERs either, as I normally drive if we're going out, and i prefer the convenience of having my car at the airport.

Our owls have been a bit quiet this year.
(We did have one that must have been perched above the bedroom window one night).
For a while we had a male pheasant that thought our roof was the perfect place to announce his presence to all the others at silly-o-clock in the morning when we moved here. Cue me blasting it with a Supersoaker - clad in my dressing gown.
Heard the 'kee kee' of a buzzard (or kite?) early this morning too.
Have seen deer in the garden too. Fortunately not muntjac!

Me and the missus commute (or used to) into Liv St from Cambridge direction. It seemed that if/when the train broke down, it always did it at Broxbourne for some reason. We even started frequenting a curry place near the station on evenings when we couldn't be arsed to sit around waiting for the next serviceable train.
It's now a running joke that we know we're safe once past Broxbourne

Yup, at first it was pretty novel seeing a muntjac in the front garden, not so much when they proceed to start eating the plants the Mrs had just planted

But it’s your choice - be realistic about what you want , how many rooms you need, will you use all the space etc. I know very little about “the Forest” other than you may need to learn how to play the banjo .
I was just chipping in with my experience of living up an Alp and a small village with fuck all facilities
Since everyone is big upping the animal noises, I lived in a house that backed onto Edinburgh Zoo … the lion noises were impressive

If the car breaks down, use the other car or phone the AA and get it taken to a garage, or ask a neighbour for help (unless you're a complete cunt most people will help out).
The more rooms the better. Provided it's all sensibly designed and built it'll be worth more when you come to downsize. Wifey and I with no children lived happily for many years in a 4 double bedroom, 3 bathroom, detached house in the sticks and made a shed load of cash when we sold it.
