Dream cars of your youth....

Surely a dream car should be something almost totally unachievable,my bedroom poster car was a Lamborghini Countach.

Yep the holy trinity for me of that era were the Ferrari Testorossa, the Lamborghini Countach and the Porsche 930.
My dream was a Porsche 930 (or a Porsche 911 Turbo as they're more commonly known), the 1989 version because it was the last year of that generation. They imported about 100 to the UK with a fancy G50 gearbox and all the high end add-ons as the last year.

Back in 1989 one of those would set you back about £5k more than an average house cost in the UK.
I was in a bad place in '89 at fifteen years old and it was not just a "hard to get" but totally unachievable. I once dared to say that when I grew up I'd own one and a guardian made sure I paid for that comment dearly for having ideas above my station.

It makes me very happy to own it. I have others that some people would hold in higher regard, but this is the one that made me cry tears of joy and this is the one that isn't so much about the car, I absolutely love it, but it's also about closing the door on abuse and realising that it wasn't my fault.

It may depend on what you class as youth.. being your pre-teens, or maybe even 20s.

Have you seen the MST Ford tribute cars?
Not cheap but if that's your thing then their cars are incredible and the quality is outrageously good, it's like someone revived the old Ford Motorsport Dept, gave them some new tech and told them to do their thing.

The closest i got really was a couple of XR3i's with my favourite being in this grey colour.



TBH i'd love to have another XR3i but as you'd expect, there's less and less of them about on sites to be able to purchase etc... They're also not cheap, but i'd expect that anyway. Nostalgia.... you've got to love it.

My Mum had an XR3i Cabrio, in white, with a red pinline down the side. Had it for quite a while too. That was after her 911 Targa though, so I think it was a bit of a come-down for her. I have vivid memories of sitting on the right side of the car and her asking "is it clear?" as she hammered the 911 up A-roads in the late 70s.

Dad had the DB5 and an XK120 in the garage, so they were sort of the "dream" cars for us kids because we envisaged that we'd get the drive them when we grew up. Things didn't quite work out that way, the XK was sold as a non-runner, and the Aston essentially was Dad's "nest-egg" and inheritance pot: so, although we got to drive it a few times after it was restored, it had to be auctioned after he passed.

Owned and driven loads of Mk1 and 2 Escorts including my Dad's autocross car with a 2 litre Fiat twin cam engine, I honestly don't see what the fuss is about, Talbot Sunbeams and Chevette/Kadetts are better.

Owned two Opel Mantas, I would happily have another one, they handle a lot like Sierras, what would be perfect would be a Manta with Sierra back axle and suspension.

Cars I lusted after when I was a teenager where based purely on looks, it's a long time ago, but I think the car I lusted after most was the Porsche 911SC in rally spec

I've always always wanted an MX5. It's the design that MG should have used for the new MGF, not the abortion of a car they produced that kept blowing up it's engine! I never liked the flip up lights and actually the modern version isn't that different from the version I liked (on the outside!!)

If I'm ever in the market for a new car or rather, a fun car, then this would be it

Before my parents got married, my BDad had a 1937 Aston Martin. He had to sell it at divorce time but it was in a book on Astons that he sent me. I found the owner about 20+ years ago and we went to see it and they had a lovely chat (the same guy that bought the car from him all those year before!)

It was this - and if I ever won the lotto, I'd track it down again and buy it. It's bloody gorgeous!!!

As a teenager I lusted after a big Ford Zodiac.
Later in life I actually had a 2.9 Granada Ghia and it was an excellent car. Too heavy to chuck about (I found that out by blueing a set of discs by enthusiastic driving) but a superb main road cruiser that was happy to cruise at 3 digit speeds all day

The MX5 was more of a well-built Lotus Elan.

Had MX5s for about 30 years. Never had the pop-up headlight version and the last (2l) one felt rather lardy compared with previous. The latest ones feel a bit 'plastic'. Just great fun. Clarkson said the MX5 was the greatest British sports car.

As for the Triumph, despite the woeful basic Herald, the Vitesse was a bit of an eye-opener when driven with a bit of vigour. (A mate had one but his dad owned a garage so it was, mechanically, always spot on and he was quite useful behind a steering wheel!).

I always wanted an AC Cobra. I dunno if I would now, I don't think the design has aged very well. I saw some at a show in the metal a while back and they were interesting enough.

Cars & bikes from our youth imprint themselves of us, which is why old Kaw's are popular with me & Skub etc.
When I was about 13 a neighbor had a Escort Mexico followed by an RS2000 which he rallied. I used to hang out in his garage as a tool fetcher & unwitting ballast during test drives etc.
Another bloke in the village had a DBS, Pantera, Gilburn, Countach & a Firebird, luckily the Pontiac failed to imprint on me. The Countach was said to be the third one on the UK. That bloke stills drives Lambo's, lives in Micheal Foots old gaff & has an EE Lightning parked on the lawn.

My dream was an Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce Green Cloverleaf, after driving a mates Sud. Someone put me in touch with Nigel Cottee an independent specialist in Nottingham and he did a great job of putting me off them with tales of rust and taking the engine out to swap the handbrake cable.
So my first car was a Capri MK1 3000GT, all the rust and none of the handling. I've had a few silly cars in their day, XR4x4, V12 Jag etc. but to be honest the most fun was a Skoda Estelle, yeah the old school joke one. It was hilarious.

That’s our car. Innocent blue, special edition, matching hard top (which we never used), 1.8, 6 speed, LSD, alcantara/leather i.e. one of the best specced versions. Had it for 6 years, loved it. Only sold it because Mrs W developed neck problems so we couldn’t use it with the top down. Should have kept it - that old refrain.

My son-in-law wants one of these, but they're quite limiting, I don't think any come with a provision for a roof of any type, even my Caterham had a roof. He has some very nice exotic supercars so I don't think he's holding back for any other reason than he probably wouldn't use it very much.

If I had massive amounts of money I'd do a TV programme where people were reunited with cars of their past, it doesn't need to be anything fancy, but just something that was memorable for emotional reasons.
For some people it's a huge thing and gives them closure on something, or cherished memories, or just a nice bit of nostalgia that isn't complicated but just gives them pleasure.

AC Cobra for me as well. I actually do think they've aged well and still want one, well a proper built replica anyway. In fact I came very close to buying one when I retired last August. Bought the wife a bloody EV instead

I had pics of the normal Ferrari Testarossa, countach, De tomaso pantera etc on my wall. The Cosworths were there too.

As I'm getting older, I now wouldn't want a Ferrari or Lambo, it'd be a Porsche or Aston Martin for me. Well, it's still achievable, same as it was when i was a teen, but that's what I like now.
