The usual March moan.
It's been dry and sunny here for the last 3 days and the council has religiously salted the roads every day.
Bah.

One of the previous owners of my Fazer decided to put in HID bulbs. The bulbs have fucked up so reverting back to standard but the HID have what looks like heat protection pods they sit in and these are to large for the bulb hole in the back. Had to strip out the nose fairing and clocks to get to the back of the lights. Got it out only to discover when splitting the headlamps from the casing they have broken every retaining lug and used a soldering iron to melt the two half's back together. Bastards.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
There's a section of road that I've ridden for 40 years, every day before covid, now twice a week. For those 40 years it's been 40mph. It was the first road to get a speed camera in the UK, way back in 1992. It now has an average speed camera setup.
This morning, I'm reaching the end of the 40mph section and I notice the board that signals the start of the 30mph section is gone. Which got me thinking.
This evening I look and they've replaced the large 40mph sign with a small 30mph repeater sign. When they did this I do not know.
Wouldn't you think it would be nice of them to put up signs to let people know of the change? After all, it's for safety, so they should want us all to be aware right away.
They did a similar thing last year to an earlier stretch of the same road. They just removed the 40mph signs, but there's no speed camera for that section.
I know, technically its poor obs on my part, but how many time do you look at the road signs you see every day? I've got other things taking my attention out on those mean streets.

As far as I know a small repeater sign doesn't/can't signal a change - unless the standards on signage have changed.McNab wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:01 pm There's a section of road that I've ridden for 40 years, every day before covid, now twice a week. Unless the 30mph (large) sign is some way back ie the 40 is now all 30, I'd put a Soapy tenner on anyone getting nicked for between 30 and 40 in the 30 repeaters getting off if they argued the signage was non-compliant.
(I raised this about a stretch of the A22 when they were bigging up the fact that safety changes had been completed ahead of schedule. I said 'they're not finished, the 50 limit has no ending'. Should have kept my mouth shut...they fixed it a week later).
The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.
Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
They've taken away the signs that signal the start of the 40mph, so I guess the logic is that the previous 30mph zone is still in effect.Count Steer wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:29 pmAs far as I know a small repeater sign doesn't/can't signal a change - unless the standards on signage have changed.McNab wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:01 pm There's a section of road that I've ridden for 40 years, every day before covid, now twice a week. Ah, right, I misunderstood. So the 40 never starts. I think they're in the clear on compliance.McNab wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:35 pmThey've taken away the signs that signal the start of the 40mph, so I guess the logic is that the previous 30mph zone is still in effect.Count Steer wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:29 pm

(They've changed/lowered miles of speed limits in this area and never put up anything to advise of impending changes).

You just need car made in the last year or two, it knows the speed limit and bongs if you exceed it....
As of July 7, 2024, new cars sold in the EU and UK must be equipped with mandatory Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems, which include speed limit warnings. These systems use cameras and GPS to detect speed limits, providing visual/audible alerts or limiting engine power. While they must be on by default, they can be overridden.

If signs for both limits are in place, you'd probably have a good defence.McNab wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:35 pmThey've taken away the signs that signal the start of the 40mph, so I guess the logic is that the previous 30mph zone is still in effect.Count Steer wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:29 pmAs far as I know a small repeater sign doesn't/can't signal a change - unless the standards on signage have changed.McNab wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:01 pm There's a section of road that I've ridden for 40 years, every day before covid, now twice a week. They are NOT even Close to intelligent (or Intelligent) - They can't tell the difference between an 80kmph route nationale and the nearby 30kmph village roadKungFooBob wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:46 pm You just need car made in the last year or two, it knows the speed limit and bongs if you exceed it....

Train travel...
Train to Manchester was delayed this morning due to 'an empty train departing Newcastle before us...'
Train from Manchester had been delayed by 20 mins due to 'waiting for a crew member earlier'
Both times I've missed my connecting trains so arrived later than expected.

They can be over-ridden, but in at least some of them, turning off the engine restores the default. So the bloods thing bleeps again at 2 mph over the 20 mph limit!KungFooBob wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:46 pm You just need car made in the last year or two, it knows the speed limit and bongs if you exceed it....
