How expensive is your bike servicing?

Post by Bustaspoke »

This came up on my YT feed earlier.I like Nathan's post's he seems to speak a lot of common sense.

I posted on A Morti's KLE500 thread & thought I'd post it here as a more general observation on what we're paying for servicing.
From memory, last years annual service on my SV650X was around £250.If I took the bike into a shop every year to cover the 10 year warranty the basic servicing would cost 50% of the cost of the bike so it's not happening.
What's everyone paying for servicing?

Don't think I've ever paid more than 150, few years ago mind. MT09. 1st..2nd..3rd then self. Monkey was 120 the other week I think.

Japanese bikes I'd get 1st service then self. It would go in for valves if they ever get that far. It's a rip off tbh. Oil and filter and a chain lube.

This time last year I paid £250 for my Gold Star to have it's first service, that's the first time I'd paid for someone else to service a bike for the best part of 20 years (it's also the only bike I've bought new in that period).

I've never paid a dealership for a service.

When I bought my Zed new in 2020,it had it's first free service at 600 miles and has never been back in 25k miles.

I was talking to a chap recently who had his Z1000 SX serviced at 6k miles by the local dealer and they raped him for £750. Some folk are happy with that, but I don't live in that world.

If I rode more exotic European bikes I'd consider the servicing/warranty thing more. But I don't.

I bought a service plan for £600 which gets you the below. I'll probably get the next one too, which I suspect will be more as it'll cover the valve service? I don't care, though, as I'm done with bike spannering.

Triumph prices are bonkers, valve check every 12k miles can be over a grand.

My old tiger was serviced by a mobile tech who formerly worked at a triumph dealership- -Muddysump he saved me a fortune as I was doing 9 or 10k miles a year.
When I bought the current tiger I paid a grand for a 4 service plan, I told them that 2 of those will be valve checks and they weren't bothered because most people that take out that plan won't do the milage so they'll do 4 oil changes for a grand.
Brakes and C&S and other bits and pieces I do myself, likewise MrsTaff's bike I'll do myself, it's a 500 honda that does about 1k miles a year so a simple oil change is all it needs.

I've done oil, filters, plugs, drivetrain, tyres myself on bikes. I'll take forks off the bike to the local guy for him to service and he's cleaned and rebuilt carbs for me. Everything else I'll do.

The car on the other hand goes in and gets done as my days of crawling about underneath 1.5 ton of car on a sloping drive are over.

Triumph dealer round the corner from me charged £85 an hour labour and are keen to add time onto the job.

Cost £800 on my GSX-S 750 3 years ago, fuel injection had to come off as well as radiator. Hopefully my Honda will be less as the fuel injection won't have to come off.

Oil changes I do myself

Do it all myself apart from the free first service.

Once had the Tenere valve clearances adjusted by a Yamaha dealer for 70 quid.

Watching that video again, it's actually £949 for the first 3 services. Not cheap still, but I had understood nearly £1k for the third service.
Even so, mine will likely get the first one for the stamp, then oil changes at home around annual/ 4k miles. 8k is pretty brave especially as mine will mostly do short journeys.
I doubt I'll still own it past 16k miles, I'm hoping electric bikes will be where I want them by then.

Muddysump did the 6K & 12K service on my Street Triple as I wanted the service book stamped.I'm with you regarding Triumph prices, they're a piss take.I do my own oil & filter change every 3K & changed the fork oil plus fitted a new C&S kit.
After this years service on my SV650X I'll be doing the rest myself as I already do with my old SV650S.

I'm the same, I can't ever remember paying for a bike service, I've paid to have my generator rewound or a rebore or even my bike restored, but I've always done my own servicing, never really considered taking it to a shop for that.
