AreThese Sprockets OK?

Post by Yorick »

Need a new chain so not sure what to do.

Normalarily I'd just change them, but not sure of the availability over here.
The front is a 16 which is 1 lower than standard

Can't help on the sprockets, but I'm not sure you should put pics of bits of bikes with that much dirty gunk on them on this forum :angelic-green: :angelic-green:

Sprockets look okay, your chain has tight spots

You already know the answer but are hoping to hear the opposite, right?

The sprockets are worn, which can be seen in the tooth shape. They will wear a new chain faster than new sprockets would. Also that wear means the hardened face is worn, and you don't know how much is left; they could already be on the steep part of the slope towards scrap metal.

It's up to you if you do the whole set or not. Nothing catastrophic is likely to happen if you don't, but you'll get more life off the new chain if you do.

I've had chains with some links tighter than others and look like yours, but movement is still ok. I put it down to bike being parked up too much and maybe waxy lubes. If the links sit on the sprocket correctly I wouldn't worry too much, depends how stiff they are. Change the lot when you change and maybe a more oily lube.
