Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?

I’d have thought it would be sensible to have your unusual cars insured on an agreed value basis, for exactly that reason. Premium may be a bit higher, but peace of mind and all that…?IccyV2 wrote: Mon May 25, 2026 1:24 pmI'd drive the Porsche 100% of the time if I could, but I don't want to leave it on supermarket carparks, or even be out in it too much because my friend had a similar type of car and someone crashed into him and wrote it off, the offenders insurance keep trying to pay him out on the basis that it's an old car and even though he keeps presenting evidence of them going through auctions in America at around $750k the insurance still won't accept that as an indicator of value.Nordboy wrote: Sun May 24, 2026 10:37 am In an ideal world, one that most of us can't afford, then you'd drive both? Some of my cars have book prices that are ridiculous compared to what they're actually selling for on the open market, so what do you do, enjoy it or keep it tucked up in the garage in case someone crashes into you and you get ripped off because that's just what the world is like these days.

For their ultra-high-performance models (like the Model S Plaid), they use a "1-foot rollout" subtraction. This means the timer starts the second the car has moved one foot, rather than from a dead stop.
But I ran out of enthusiasm, so didn't check how long that segment takes.

About 1/10th of a second from what I can gather.Horse wrote: Mon May 25, 2026 4:11 pmIntrigued, I Googled.

That's the better performance figures, they're the ones I'm interested in, rather than 0-60.
I did see those before I ordered the bog standard rwd, once I saw that, I didn't see the need to spend loads more ££.

It would make sense, but it's a part-time job to do all that, I remember when I had about a dozen motorcycles at the peak of my collection and it took a lot of time to manage all the admin, MOTs, insurance, maintenance, etc.Wossname wrote: Mon May 25, 2026 3:42 pm

To get an agreed value on an unusual or rare car of value, it takes a long process of forms, telephone calls, photos, disputes and faff.
First world problems and all that but it's a royal pain in the bum all because everyone on the planet is trying to rip everyone else off and you can't trust anyone at all, so every tiny little detail needs discussing in minute detail.
It's exhausting.
My friend actually has an agent to do all this for him, he's worked himself into a fortunate position from nothing, self-made man, and now he has art and cars and things of value that need insuring and it's enough of a job that he pays an agent to do it all.
He would be the first to be humble and be reluctant to moan because it's a nice position to be in, but when you make money you don't stop worrying about stuff, you just worry about different stuff.

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Many years ago we sold a Lotus to a guy who sourced cars for people. He told us he also provided a full maintenance service for his clients, battery charging, valeting, taking them for services and MOTs. It was rumoured that his clients were mainly from the music industry and included people like Elton John, Mickey Most and a lot of other celebs. I didn't believe it when we were told about him, but later I thought it makes sense that people would employ someone to make sure their fleet/collection was turnkey ready. Nice work if you can get it!

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Ferraris first full electric vehicle. Looks like a bloody Honda ffs!

BBC wrote:Luxury sports car maker Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric car - the $640,000 (£474,320) Luce.
The new model departs from the look of typical Ferraris as the Italian brand's first ever five-seater, created in collaboration with the LoveFrom agency founded by former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive.
Responses on social media to the launch have ranged from describing it as "straight to the junkyard trash" to an "absolute masterclass in design".
Supercar rivals like Lamborghini and Porsche have scaled back on their EV plans due to poor demand and intense competition from Chinese brands.
Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna said in Rome that the Luce, Italian for "light", has taken half a decade to develop.
Ferrari plans to roll out the electric vehicle (EV) after previously ruling out such a move, opting instead to make hybrid cars that are powered by both petrol and electricity.
The Luce runs with a Ferrari-made electric motor on each wheel, helping the car to hit 60mph (96km/h) in around 2.5 seconds.
The firm said that all of the components are made in-house, so that the car can be repaired by the company well into the future, protecting the Luce's resale value.
The shift by motor industry giants to EVs has faced major obstacles in recent years.
Carmakers including Ford and Volkswagen have doubled down on petrol cars, especially in the US, due to poor demand and regulatory changes under President Donald Trump, who has cut incentives for EV buyers.
The launch of Jaguar's electric concept car was heavily criticised for abandoning the British brand's classic styling.

I don't know if it still exists but there was a (London based iirc) car club with a whole fleet of desirable stuff. You paid a monthly sub and, depending on the amount of the sub you got points which got you x days a year in the cars of your choice. Some days like weekends and Bank Hols were more points and the points for each car varied depending on value, rarity, cost of keeping it mint etc.Taipan wrote: Tue May 26, 2026 11:17 am Many years ago we sold a Lotus to a guy who sourced cars for people. Seemed like a great way of trying out many different things. I suspect a few members were marginal con artists though - pitch up at places/meetings pretending they owned them in order to create an impression of wealth/success.
Seemed like a perfect option - driving stuff without the buggeration of buying, owning, maintaining, storing, selling....

Yeah, you know that Ferrari I was thinking of buying for my ice cream shopping*? I think I'll give the Lucy a miss. When I go ice cream shopping in my Ferrari it's all about which ice cream company I'm going to buy, never mind the 'strawberry Mivvy and two 99s please' or 'a Cornetto and a couple of choc ices' it's 'Hmm, Ben and Jerry's or Walls?'Saga Lout wrote: Tue May 26, 2026 5:29 pmYeah, you know that Ferrari I was thinking of buying for my ice cream shopping*? (If I turned up in that Lucy I'd have no cred at all, not even if I had chimes that play Teddy Bears Picnic on it. It's not hideous but I fell asleep looking at the images).

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Car makers seem to have forgotten how to make good looking cars. Jaguar, the company that gave us the XK 120, 140, 150, D type and E type, try their hand at an electric car and it's a monstrosity. BMW give us the Bunnymobile and now Ferrari think bland is the way forward. What is the world coming to?
Not that I could afford to buy a Lucy, but if I could, I wouldn't.

But both are better looking than the current offerings from Jaguar and BMW. And pretty much everything is better looking than Lucy.Horse wrote: Tue May 26, 2026 8:14 pm.Saga Lout wrote: Tue May 26, 2026 6:43 pm Car makers seem to have forgotten how to make good looking cars.
