The Mangbetu people of Congo, Central Africa, were known for their elongated heads which they used to deform intentionally by applying force (tight wrapping) to babies skulls, a practice known as Lipombo. They believed that this pleased the Gods and was a sign of beauty. This practice died out by the 1950's.
Intentional cranial deformation predates written history; it was common in a number of cultures that are widely separated geographically and chronologically, including ancient Egyptians, the Maya, the Inca, Huns, Kushans, Aboriginal Australians, and still occurs today in a few places like Vanuatu

People do stupid things and nobody notices. I wonder which things that we do now will be regarded as stupid by future civilisations.

It is indeed. Normal-looking 1970s family. You just never know who people really are, do you!

His house on Garden Lane was 400 yards from my school.
My uncle used to drink in his local and sort of knew him

Whilst he took a long while to catch, we knew the search was extensive. A guy down here used to deliver tyre carcasses up there somewhere. It was casual work/cash-in-hand and all you can say is, he had a beard like Sutcliffe. Somehow Plod linked a casual paid lorry driver, that looked similar to Sutcliffe in beard only, and raided his house in Essex at dawn one morning. Given this was pre-networked computers that must have been some investigative man hours to get to him!Yorick wrote: Tue Jun 16, 2026 9:40 pmHis house on Garden Lane was 400 yards from my school.

Re: utterly random picture thread.

This wonderful quirky scene was captured by the British documentary photographer Patrick Ward.
The following was written by Patrick:
“Life is full of difficult decisions....
“When I first caught sight of this motorcyclist in Hyde Park I assumed that he had crash landed and, as an ex-biker myself, I felt I had only four possible options:
1. To make sure his Triumph motorcycle was undamaged.
2. To call for an ambulance and possibly the helicopter rescue service.
3. To stand on my head and administer mouth to mouth resuscitation.
4. To take a photograph.
“Well as you can see, the photographer in me prevailed. In my defense I should tell you that this picture became the cover of my 2014 book, 'Being English'.
“Oh, and it turned out that the Triumph rider was simply practicing his yoga....”

Re: utterly random picture thread.
When I joined the RAF as an apprentice in 1966 they paid me 9 shillings a day. We were paid for 7 days a weeks so = £3 3s a week.
(And I was saving 10 shillings a week.
