I thought I'd seen that before, a quick Google shows the story is from 2012. The Snopes article is good, he'd been getting warnings about his water collection since 2002, and it's not a barrel collected from his guttering, he'd built a few big reservoirs.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/man-g ... -property/

I'm amazed 4 states have some regs on harvesting rainwater! I guess if we do emigrate there I'll have to rethink teh water butt business plan! :D

This article has been updated for 2023.

Rainwater harvesting as a primary water supply is a relatively new idea and industry. Therefore, the laws around rainwater harvesting can be a concern. As of right now, the federal government does not regulate rainwater harvesting at all, but rather, leaves it up to the individual state governments.

Make sure that your rainwater harvesting trade contractor is aware of and complies with local codes and regulations.

[This post is not legal advice. Make sure to do your own due-diligence to ensure that you are compliant with federal, state, and local codes & regulations]

Is it Illegal to Harvest Rainwater?
In almost every case, no.

Out of the lower 48 states in the U.S., Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Illinois, and Arkansas are the only states that are currently heavily regulated to keep homeowners from harvesting and using the rain that falls on their property.

But in most states, rainwater harvesting is either not regulated at all, or actually encouraged by the state government as a method for water conservation, stormwater management, and water availability.

Rainwater is a resource. And once it falls on your property, it’s yours. Free to use.

There's always more to the story than meets the eye. I've got property in West Virginia and not long ago something similar happened. All of the water that farmers rely upon. It's mostly livestock as the land tends to have a lot of rock outcroppings. The man that owns the property below ours diverted a stream to water his cattle. That shut off water to several people down hill from him. He was taken to court and lost.

I wonder if this man's actions caused similar deprivation to people down hill.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has urged parents to let their children stay up to watch England take on Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup.

...

Asked for his message to parents, Tuchel said: "Write an excuse for school and let them watch.

"There's so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years. Let them watch.

Hopefully, but seemingly not quoted, he also suggested that teachers should watch to, and call in sick.

My next thought was: does he think that, a. those parents will also phone in sick so they can look after the kids or, b all England fans have staff to look after their kids?

And what about the staff who should be looking after those kids who phone in sick because they let their own kids bunk off school?

I'm not advocating the kids bunking off. They can sit up and watch the match on the condition that they get kicked out of bed the usual time next morning.

Call it a life lesson which will be invaluable in years to come, preparing them for the morning after a night on the piss mid-week and having to get their arse into work.

Ah. I see.

Parents gain points from the kids for letting them stay up, then drop them at school, conscience clear.

And the teachers have to deal with arsey disruptive kids all day, making learning more difficult for the other kids.
