New Frame Day - Bird Aeris 9

Post by Numnut »

Perhaps against my better judgement, I've gone and bought a new frame. This has 160mm of travel and can take up to a 180mm fork. There's a linkage to up travel to 180mm at the rear, but they're hard to come by. It comes with a one up seat post and a set of cura 4 brakes which is pretty good. The seat post is 210 drop, but can be adjusted down to 190, I think it'll be on the limit of what's comfortable for me.

I should be able to move the wheels, drivetrain and controls across from the Aether so will just need a new fork and shock. Typically, Merlin have sold out of reduced fox 36s so I'll have to see what I can find. Probably going to fit a SD Select + shock unless I come across something better.

The plan is to stay at 160 front + rear and have bit of a burlier trail type bike.

All being well it should be here on Friday...

I'll have a brand new 36, same spec as the Merlin ones, uncut steerer etc... for sale in a few days...

Give me a shout if you want it...

Yeah they’re both quite similar, the Aeris is a bit more ‘gravity focussed’ according to bird and the Aether is more trail oriented.

So the Aeris will be better on the downs and hopefully still a bit poppy and not too heavy. Will definitely be overkill for what I’d normally ride, but I wanted to try one and one came for sale!

@mboy yes I could definitely be interested, let me know what you’d like for it.

Be interested to see how you get on. I had an early Aeris mk1.5 but didn’t find it pedalled well. Was fun downhill.

This should be nice when built!

Drop me a PM...

Also, what shock size does it take...? If it's a 230mm, then I might have a matching Fox X2 to go with it...

I'm hoping so. I love my Aether 9, but have fancied one of these for a while so the Aether will be finding a new home.

@mboy sent you a message.

Frame was meant to arrive today but parcel force didn’t attempt delivery. Hopefully will arrive tomorrow.

The Aether has been stripped down so parts are ready to move across when it arrives. Forks should be turning up tomorrow too…

It’s all built up now and looking pretty good. I’ve still got some play in the headset and need to swap brake pads but we’re nearly there.

The dropper is a one up 210 which is a bit too high even when it’s slammed. I’ve got pins to drop it to 190 so I’ll give that a try another day.

Might take it for a run to work tomorrow if I get a chance to sort the last bits out otherwise it’ll be off to twisted at the weekend.
