does a £200000 watch tell time better than his cheap knock off
I can't remember the last time I used a watch, I did find the one I was looking for, now need to find somewhere to get a battery for it
I set the time in the car to match my phone and it always changes after a few months

Some people obvs can't read proper.
If you get the Saturday papers and read the supplements, some elements of the press are definitely obsessed with selling me an overpriced timepiece.

Said it before so switch off if you’re bored - I have 2x Lidl spur of the moment watches, £2.95 each I think. They keep perfect time, which is what I want a watch to do, need a battery every 5 years or so. Straps don’t last as long and cost more than the watch.
They don’t look gorgeous, but I can do without £20k gorgeous-ness.

I've got a G-Shoch watch that's much more complicated than it needs to be just to tell me the time. Even with all its bells and whistles it's still cheaper than a Rolex or any other mechanical watch because it updates itself from my phone which gets its time from the internet.
But you seem to be missing the point of expensive mechanical watches. Rolex, Patek Philippe etc are not competing with Casio, G-Shock or even Apple. They're Veglen goods. Their function isn't to tell the time, their function is to demonstrate that their owners have enough money to buy them.

I do like old school mechanical watches, but all 5 of mine are modestly priced. I may buy more, but I am not kidding myself that they are 'better'.
My most reliable watch was IIRC £2.99, the cheapest black plastic quartz LCD I could find. I kept perfect time, lasted 3 or 4 years on my arm, the strap broke so it was bunged in a garage drawer. Several years later I bought a bike and cable tied the watch to the bars. Five years later I sold the bike with it still working on the bars.

I'm not averse to a nice wristwatch.
This is my idea of a nice style of wristwatch though.

Edit: For slightly less £
I'd happily wear this although I prefer the similar design non-black Skagen I have in the drawer. I've had a couple of their products and quite like Nordic design.

No odds to me, automatic, wind-up or battery, they all fail to work for more than one month on my my wrist. No idea why, have not bought one in years.

I guess the same is true of the adverts for women's jewellery and designer brand clothes...although they may think both are worth a punt.IccyV2 wrote: Mon Jul 13, 2026 12:10 pmThey're not advertising to you, but they can't stop you buying the paper.Count Steer wrote: Sat Jul 11, 2026 3:20 pm ...some elements of the press are definitely obsessed with selling me an overpriced timepiece.![]()
