97 is a fair crack. He was the 'voice of F1' in my youth, I thought it was a golden era (or one of) of F1 the 80s and 90s and he was a good part of what made the coverage exciting with his enthusiasm and slight arseiness. He'll always be the voice of F1 for me.

His shouts of excitement always woke me up if something good had happened whilst I'd nodded off!
Remember his voice and commentary very fondly (especially the grass track when he said someone with a clear screen would win, because he had a clear screen - at which point they crashed!!!)

Yeah that. I used to be a big F1 fan back when it was enjoyable to watch. Walker and Hunt made it come to life.DefTrap wrote: Sat Mar 13, 2021 6:28 pm97 is a fair crack. Something in my head says he was a bike racer, i'm 90% sure.
Something else says he raced at the IoM, i'm only 40% sure on that one.

Yup. Graham Walker was a pretty good racer (IIRC), but Murray wasn't that good, but still loved the atmosphere and somehow got into the commentating; I think his day job was as a journalist before the commentating became "full time".wheelnut wrote: Sat Mar 13, 2021 7:20 pmRight on both counts iirc. Might have been in advertising. IIRC there's a photo of him and his colleagues, each forking mouthfuls out of tins of dog food to prove it was safe for people to eat.Rockburner wrote: Sat Mar 13, 2021 7:38 pm I think his day job was as a journalist before the commentating became "full time".

Re: Just Dead Celebrity Express Thread !
RIP MW.
Like any commentator thinking on the hoof he had his share of amusing gaffes.
Copied from google...
The lead car is unique, except for the one behind it which is identical.
I don't make mistakes. I make prophecies which immediately turn out to be wrong.
There's nothing wrong with the car except that it's on fire.
And now, excuse me while I interrupt myself.
And that just shows you how important the car is in Formula One Racing.
Either the car is stationary, or it's on the move.
That's history. I say history because it happened in the past.

There are seven previous winners of the race on the grid today, four of them are Michael Schumacher!
