He who leads the sung service. So for Evensong, he would be the cantor, "O Lord, open thou our lips" and the choir responds "And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. So my friend (who has a degree in music from Cambridge and is also a conductor as well as being a Priest) is well suited to the post and is able to sing the plainchant perfectly.

Plainsong is curious, I'm not in the slightest bit religious but plainsong in a church* makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's there with organ music, it just doesn't sound any where near as good on a recording or a radio.

* If you're wondering why I would be in a church listening to plainsong, last time it was a deconsecrated church being used as a gallery. The acoustics were the same and some random chap started singing as he liked the noise it made.

Medieval polyphony and organum are the same. Again recordings don't capture the sound of it being sung in a large echoey space.

Never really got Friday night Dinner, but he was great in Chernobyl.

Had me glued to the TV..... Miserable, sad, ruthless and upsetting - But a great production with some great performances.

I went to Chernobyl and they showed the meltdown sequence from the mini-series on the coach... soon as we got home we bought it on DVD
