Turned out it is an archaic French measurement of length that pre-dates the metric system, and is still used in Swiss watchmaking. It is 2.256 mm should you need to know that.
I've often wondered how they measured tiny stuff before micrometers ????
Gnat's cocks.

Hence the expression.

That's more quantum physics. You eventually get to a smidgen of a gnat's cock hair.

Anyone know anything about the 'assembled in Great Britain' - Studio Underd0g watches?

The missus quite likes one of them.

I assume it's a design studio with - Chinese parts, screwed together here and pitched at the lower, fashiony end of the market?

(£800 - £2550 sort of thing)

Are the Aliexpress ones knockoffs or are the Studio Underd0g ones just differently branded versions of them? :hmmm:

Edit: Probably knockoffs. She found out about Underd0g in an article in The Economist about a trend for designing and assembling watches in the UK and they seem legit.

Does make you wonder, apart from the branding, how different are they? Are the cheapo ones really Japanese movements? (I do start from assuming what you get from Aliexpress might be, just about, worth what you pay for it though).

Saturday just gone me and Mrs. G and another couple had lunch booked up in London so thought we'd do a bit of window shopping. One of the ports of call was the new Christopher Ward showroom. I called them on Friday to make sure they were open as the reviews referenced some issues. Turns out I needed to make an appointment. I asked if I could and was told to do it online. Mmm, ok. Fine.
Only I dropped a bollock and booked it for 1pm on the 23rd, not the 21st. . So we rock up, press the buzzer and the bloke comes down to clear up the confusion. At this point I was apologetic and explained my fumbled testicle and we stood there expectantly waiting to be told it wasn't a problem and be ushered in.
Nope.
'Come back on Monday'
'I can't. I'm working'
'Oh, just rebook and appointment then. Bye'

Right....

Now I know the mistake was mine and mine alone, but if I were in the business of selling watches...

So we buggered off to the restaurant via Mr. Jones Watches in Neal Street. By way of contrast, the sales assistant in there could not have been more accommodating, pointing out the different watches, the choice of straps that can be changed at no cost, offering any to try on. And these are watches that cost a couple of hundred, not a couple of grand, minimum.

I know where I'd rather shop when I decide to buy another watch.

IWC were the same. Thus I purchased.

So were the nice people in the shop I bought my RWs from.

See a pattern emerging..?

(Mr. Jones might have offered a Panda Pop as they sell kids' watches, as my Mrs. kept reminding me whilst we were in there. )

I do wonder about the logic of having a London showroom on the first floor of a dead end street, with no passing trade drawn in by the shiny timepieces on offer because you have no shop window. I know CW tout themselves as a 'luxury online watch boutique', but I like to feel a watch on my wrist prior to buying.

Bizarre set up.

Apparantly a real thing (I've never heard of them), but to be utterly frank.... it does kinda look like something found on a market stall for a fiver...

I've always liked the Tudor Black Bay in the bronze finish - interesting to see the price difference.

I'm not really a watch guy, but I absolutely love the look of it, especially as its aged and got a nice patina on the bronze! Its in America though and i'm going to get stiffed with 20% vat and a bit of duty too. Might have a cheeky bid to see if I can make it worth while? A hard thing to value though?

I love bronze watches. I would like the Tudor on the bronze bracelet but I really can't justify that much money. The Heroic one is nice but far too big for my small wrist. I shall stick with my Yema.

Hamilton do a bronze coloured cased version of their khaki field watch that is quite nice, not quite as big and blingy as that tho'

Had a look, quite nice but didn't leap out at me, and 38mm is tiny. Might get a u-boat and be done with it! :D

They do black and white faced versions, I do like a field watch, especially the Tudor Rangers but it's three times the cost of the Hamilton (and not Bronze).
