Where's my bios gone?

Post by ..... »

Was getting a 'battery low' warning for a couple of weeks on boot up.
Went away for a couple of months and computer wouldn't start up on return.
Put a new 2032 in there, and still we have no life.
Iirc its running xp, no I don't have a boot up disc.
Apart from holding a door open, any ideas what can be done with it?

There might be a jumper (sometimes it's a switch) on the motherboard you can short to clear the bios and reset it back to the defaults (look for a manual online if the jumper isn't obvious)

When you say won't start up, how far does it get, does it make any noises, if it beeps count the number of beeps, they're a diagnostic code.

If you remove the main battery and the new 2032 for a while then replace the bios battery it might clear any corrupted bios memory.

If it showed a BIOS battery warning that long and now will not power on, the board is likely dead. Try a different known good power supply and clear CMOS again, but on hardware that old XP era, failed caps or VRM are common. It is usually not worth repairing, salvage the drive and recycle the rest.

Need a lot more information please. Is it a laptop or desktop? Make and model? Windows XP suggest its very old so the chances of finding a copy of the bios to reload are very slim.
