Gas bottle connections and turning on ??

I'm sure a few of you have used this sort of set up, maybe not in a home but caravan ??

Three of the cooker rings (hobs?) are gas here . Luckily, the fourth one is electric, so I've been able to cook ok !! LOL (Just only one pan at a time )

But, I've tried turning the gas, I think, on - there's a good chance the bottle is empty, but I don't want to head to the supermarket to change it if it's just me being and eejit and not understanding the process !!!


It's all connected up, but it's not everso clear which way to turn the 'tap' to make it on; or what the pushy button on the other side from the twisty 'tap' does?


Any help appreciated (then of course the obvious piss taking!) If I have to go get a new bottle, that's fine, just need to be sure I've tried the correct things to make it work before I do a 'disconnect' and purchase more

It's a clip on regulator, the button releases the clip so it will pull off the top of the bottle.

The lever all the way up is 'on'.

I can't pick the bottle up from where it is, was trying not to disconnect it!!! But might have to to pull it out of the cupboard and see if it sloshes!!!

Re empty Vs full, in the UK gas bottles often have a thin metal disc in the neck, stamped with a weight. That's when empty.

Onto bathroom scales to check.

I can pick this one up if disconnected, but am trying not to disconnect for now (not a fan of portable gas stuff unless camping sized!!)

I wiggled it in it's place and it did slosh a bit but even with the lever pushed all the way up, nothing seems to be coming out to light the hobs

Another rule of thumb: A tap lever will point in the direction of flow if on and across if off

Boil the kettle. Pour the hot water slowly down the side of the bas bottle. shortly after, feel the temperature of the bottle. it will be cold where the liquid gas level is to, and be hot where there's no gas.

You lot are slipping. No one recommend holding a lit candle to the nozzle,then try the tap?

Turn the knob off and press it in while pulling up the regulator to get it off.

Ok, I'm pretty sure it's got gas in it, but I'll go disconnect it after I've finished this bucket of tea and see if I can

see another tap

refit it for a successful lighting of gas hobs !!!

Turns out I have zero patience !!!

Disconnected, shook it - some gas, but not loads (possibly a quarter full - ex-landlady, so reasonably good at sussing barrel contents, although not by shaking for the real ales )

Reconnected it and tried firing up the hobs again, but nope.

But I'd heard gas when I'd either connected or disconnected and couldn't find a second tap

Turns out it's totally simple - had to keep the buttons on the hob pushed down for a lot LOT longer than I thought !!!! LOL LOL


Sooooo - for approx 1/4 of a cylinder of gas I can cook on all four hobs, if I want to

It's well over a decade since I cooked on gas for home cooking.

Damn it's hot !!!! I nearly killed my fried rice last night cos I didn't realise how hot the gas would get the pan !!

But, used again this morning and I really like it Just have to get used to using the smaller rings rather than heading straight to the biggest and fullest power

That bottle finally ran out a couple of days ago

Considering the new one cost me 23,90€ and I reckon the old one was about a third full (possibly a smidge less) when I got here, that's about 4 months cooking on the old and possibly 12 months on the new!!

I'm liking this gas cooking - since my electric bill has been horrific.

Think the electric towel radiator in the shower room (second coldest room) was madly expensive, especially when I had all that cold air blasting through for about three months

I've now turned the towel rad off to see, but might just have to get a timer plug for my oil filled rad so it just heats in the morning before I use it, or something like that

We (wifey and I) usually get well over a year out of a gas bottle. That's mainly using the hob with occasional grill and rarely oven. If I need an oven for seriously stuff I use the gas BBQ.
