What is your assembly goo-goo muck of choice?
I'm going to be joining two pieces of metal that will carry coolant/antifreeze in a car cooling system - what would be your jointing compound of choice? Hylomar, Hermetite, Threebond or something else?

I am firmly in the three bond camp.
Tried all the others, bought some Ducati bond as it was on offer loved it, won't pay for the Ducati name bit now but deffo only use three bond

Permanent join? Or something that needs to come apart in the future?

Fairly permanent. Once fixed it shouldn't need to come apart unless it needs a major engine overhaul.Rockburner wrote: Fri Feb 06, 2026 7:58 pm Permanent join? Or something that needs to come apart in the future?

This, I use the Suzuki branded one, recommended to me by a couple of people who build race enginescrust wrote: Fri Feb 06, 2026 4:47 pm I am firmly in the three bond camp.

John Hackett, who builds very fast and reliable Ducati engines, is also a Threebond devotee. But he uses the Ducati branded stuff, obvs...

Threebond. I managed to get P&W R2800 18cyl radials oil tight with that stuff. I was accused of sorcery.

I believe that Yamabond is the badge-engineered version of Threebond that Yamaha market. Open to being proved wrong...

Re: What is your assembly goo-goo muck of choice?
You're correct, but a different type to the Suzuki one, the Suzuki one is literally a Threebond box with a Suzuki Genuine Part sticker on it. Yamabond used to be (and probably still is) very good for two stroke crankcases, which are direct metal to metal joints.mangocrazy wrote: Fri Feb 06, 2026 10:47 pmI believe that Yamabond is the badge-engineered version of Threebond that Yamaha market. Has this car got a Lux Interior?
Or maybe it's lined with Fur?

Re: What is your assembly goo-goo muck of choice?
Does the Yamabond version still carry the '1215' name, or is it different (implying a different formulation)? I thought that vanilla Threebond was pretty good for metal to metal bonding anyway.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 12:17 amYou're correct, but a different type to the Suzuki one, the Suzuki one is literally a Threebond box with a Suzuki Genuine Part sticker on it. The vehicle in question is in very Good Taste and is entirely free from Garbage, Man.

I'm now wondering if I should be looking at something from Threebond for the JAPton... I was just going to use Blue Hylomar.

Every time I've used Threebond it's done exactly what was required of it. I doubt you'll find anything better.Rockburner wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:46 am I'm now wondering if I should be looking at something from Threebond for the JAPton... I was just going to use Blue Hylomar.

As long as it comes off when required, 100-ish year old magnesium crankcases don't need any extra agro!mangocrazy wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:51 amEvery time I've used Threebond it's done exactly what was required of it. Re: What is your assembly goo-goo muck of choice?
Magnesium poses a different set of questions, and I'd be looking for a Technical Data Sheet before committing. But John Hackett works on some pretty exotic stuff and the race bikes in particular use a lot of magnesium, and he swears by Threebond (although it may be the specific Ducati flavour).Rockburner wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:54 amAs long as it comes off when required, 100-ish year old magnesium crankcases don't need any extra agro!mangocrazy wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:51 amEvery time I've used Threebond it's done exactly what was required of it. Human Fly on the wall googling says it's no longer 1215mangocrazy wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:18 amDoes the Yamabond version still carry the '1215' name, or is it different (implying a different formulation)? Depends how much you want it to leak oil, my experiences of Hylomar weren't great, but I stopped using it 30 years agoRockburner wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:46 am I'm now wondering if I should be looking at something from Threebond for the JAPton... I was just going to use Blue Hylomar.

Well, it's designed to leak oil, so I'm well aware that I'm up against it somewhat...Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 11:35 amDepends how much you want it to leak oil, my experiences of Hylomar weren't great, but I stopped using it 30 years agoRockburner wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 10:46 am I'm now wondering if I should be looking at something from Threebond for the JAPton... Re: What is your assembly goo-goo muck of choice?
John just got back to me - this is what he said:
I genuinely would recommend the Ducati “grey” sealant (prob made by three bond) no problem to use on mag cases it releases quite easily, cleans off easily and it works
I've seen the Ducati Threebond compound on eBay, but I'd be slightly surprised if it was any different to vanilla TB. But it's OK on mag cases, which is good.
