Gousto, Hello fresh etc...
Lots of people waxing lyrical about these and some of my wife's friends have got in her ear about them. I couldn't imagine my wife paying for recipes and portioned food etc. But, her friends say the food is good quality, the recipes are nice and probably not what you'd normally cook, pleasant change etc blah. Turns out most of them are on 50% off promo, so we had a Gousto box arrive today! It was indeed a nice meal, and I guess we'll be eating them until the promos stop!

Re: Gousto, Hello fresh etc...
We tried them a while back, and they give you the recipe and the spices, but you provide the fresh ingredients (or at least, that was our case). I think it's a decent way to discover new tastes and recipes, but gets rather spendy in the longer term. We discovered some new dishes (Massaman curry, for example), but have since found much cheaper sources for the ingredients.

I was on Gousto for a couple or 6 months, cracking grub couldn't fault it, was very handy as they were / are the only ones to offer meal plans for 1.

Had HelloFresh for a while when the missus was ill (i can cook not at all). Some interesting recipes, although we swerved all the higher salt contents ones (one of the reasons she was ill in the first place) which meant an awful lot of the Asian meals didn't get ordered. I realised what a greedy bastard I must be as I found the portions of meat tiny compared to what i was used to.

Re: Gousto, Hello fresh etc...
We started out on Hello Fresh a couple of years ago, when I suggested to him indoors that maybe he could take on a bit more of the 'domestic chores'. He likes to cook, but likes variety. Really liked them.
Switched to Green Chef about a year ago (same company) when I decided I needed to shed a stone last year, as they are similar recipes but a bit more calorie conscious.
Still going strong. And weirdly, our monthly grocery spend is about the same. Less waste and all that.
If anybody wants to try three meals for free (well, you pay around a fiver for the postage), drop me a DM and I'll give you a code

Re: Gousto, Hello fresh etc...
We had Hello Fresh for a while. We got a decent offer from a show and managed to keep that by threatening to cancel
Had it once a month but even then there was far too much pasta.
Cancelled it and never felt much need to restart.

Gusto would be a great name for a kebab shop.
You could tell people you were having something from Gusto for tea and they'd think you were a healthy kitchen wizz!

We tried Hello Fresh for about 6 months. Was ok- had to top up lots ( to be expected with a large family)
Also Gousto for 6 months: too much packaging. Got sick of surplus packets of this/that
Now i pay for the BBC Good Food app and have found this a much better option re: planning etc.

So-called low fat foods taste horrible with the fat removed, so are laced with sugars to make them taste acceptable. Fat doesn't make us fat - that's a self serving lie propagated by the food industry. Sugar makes us fat. Worked in the food industry all my working life in case anyone asks.ignored by the majority of the medical profession and rubbished by the food industry. We should have heeded his warning.

My wife uses one called Hello Chef and we're really happy with it, you pick from which menus you want and they send everything in daily boxes with all the ingredients, everything is organic/fresh/etc, with no added rubbish. You get a sheet with each meal telling you exactly how to cook it.
Aside from the nice meals my wife is really enjoying the prep and cooking, each meal is about an hour start to finish and she's never been a bad cook but this has really opened up different ways of cooking and using ingredients. This bonus is you get exactly enough in each box so no need to measure anything out or faff around buying a big tub of something for the odd little bit you'll use now and then.
It works out the same price as any other way we eat, food is expensive these days wherever you are and take-aways are expensive, we very rarely eat fast food (maybe a McDonalds once every couple of months if we feel like something cheap and nasty) but we'd be about 50/50 cooking and ordered in meals, all healthy stuff, but this is better and now we probably use these meals for 25-28 days out of every month.

Yup. That's what I said to the wife, it's a lot of boxes for a little food! Tis a mark against them for sure.Docca wrote: Thu Mar 05, 2026 9:18 am We tried Hello Fresh for about 6 months. Was ok- had to top up lots ( to be expected with a large family)

If I wasn't watching the news I wouldn't know anything was happening, we've had the odd bang and obviously a fair bit of discussion about it but the actual impact is very light. The UK news is ridiculously sensationalised, I don't know which Dubai they're commenting on but it isn't this one, there have been a couple of incidents but compared to when I was in Iraq it's very light, just a few stray drones or bits of debris.Wossname wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2026 10:40 am Iccy - seeing as you’re on “here” atm - how are things in Dubai, if that’s where you are? We were all asked to register with the consulate, but then some clown somewhere has taken those numbers and claimed it's people asking for repatriation flights, but literally no one I know who lives here has asked to go back to the UK and in fact it's quite the opposite, my son-in-law was away on a trip and was desperate to get back here, he was sat next to Ant Middleton on the flight back here, he was also very keen to get back over here.
People on holiday are obviously desperate to get back but that's because they've got jobs and families to get back to.
It might get worse but for now it's little more than a curiosity.

I think the news in "other" countries is like that tho. I've seen comments about the uk reporting on stuff happening here and it seems like a completely different country/situation - the French news has done similar sometimes with things in the UKIccyV2 wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2026 10:56 amIf I wasn't watching the news I wouldn't know anything was happening, we've had the odd bang and obviously a fair bit of discussion about it but the actual impact is very light. Sensationalism sells "news" - it's why I tend not to get my news from papers, or online versions; there's always an agenda or a need for sales/sensationalism

I posted a picture on here of me unwrapping some food and someone complained.
