Labelling of stuff
I was in a main Coffee brand branch grabbing a drink and they had a sandwich in the clearance basket on the counter.
It was Vegan Ham and Cheese.
Looking up the ingredients and it seems to have the following:
Ingredients: Contains Vegan Smoked Ham Flavour Slices, grated coconut-oil cheese, and vegan mayo.
It's wrong in a lot of ways in my mind, if its to be vegan why would it try to replicate all of the things that are non Vegan, why would it not brand itself as a Corn flavoured sandwich with coconut and other vegan style stuff.....
It reminds me of the Beef Bacon I had when in Malaysia....

Because a lot of vegans want the nice flavours but without the killing of animals. It's that simple really.petrolpete wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 11:37 am I was in a main Coffee brand branch grabbing a drink and they had a sandwich in the clearance basket on the counter.

Re: Labelling of stuff
You could argue that the labelling is letting you know what it'll taste like (approximately at least). There's a lot of vegetarians/vegans who have converted from eating meat so are familiar with those flavours.petrolpete wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 11:37 am I was in a main Coffee brand branch grabbing a drink and they had a sandwich in the clearance basket on the counter.

It would have the same flavours, but without the silly descriptions.weeksy wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 11:38 amBecause a lot of vegans want the nice flavours but without the killing of animals. Re: Labelling of stuff
There is pushback from consumers groups to stop meat descriptive labelling on plant based product, because it is misleading for meat eaters obvs. Also EU parliament changed some rules.

Re: Labelling of stuff
My son, dil and their family are committed, long standing, vegans.
Many of the meals they prepare look and smell delicious, sadly though, they're often quite bland.
Sometimes they'll absolutely rave about some food or other, how amazingly tasty etc. I only taste bland. It's as if their tastebuds have somehow dialed right back and they get a taste burst from very little.
I do joke privately with my daughter, who's essentially a gourmand, that her brother would eat cardboard and enjoy it.
Once I enquired at our very good cheese shop if they had vegan cheese. The guy asked me to leave the shop and come back when I had regained my senses.
However, each to their own and they're very healthy and fit.

I can put up with strawberry marmalade if it gets rid of misleading 'plant based' labels.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 3:00 pm There is pushback from consumers groups to stop meat descriptive labelling on plant based product, because it is misleading for meat eaters obvs. Also EU parliament changed some rules.

Not the same as veganism buy my wife’s on what seems a permanent diet.
She can’t tolerate spicy food at all so most of the ready made slimmers meals are out because they whack in a load of spices to substitute for the fat and sugar reduction.

Re: Labelling of stuff
I think your palate adjusts eg having reduced my salt intake over time restaurant food and a lot of the pre-prepped meals now taste mouth-puckeringly salty.
It may be that the veggie offspring and their families now have more sensitive palates so enjoy aspects of flavour that most of us don't get?
I know I can enjoy simple food that I would have dismissed as boring not long ago.

Re: Labelling of stuff
I'm not vegan myself, nor vegetarian either but I can understand people liking certain meat flavours, but without the battery hen, pigfarm, corn fed steroid beef stuff.
There, that wasn't rocket surgery to understand, was it?

Yeah but by chasing the flavours they're just perpetrating the endless cycle of animal slaughter, their morals would be better served by getting folk away from liking the taste of flesh.

I understand that, but it's the industrial processing to make said flavours that puts me off.demographic wrote: Thu Apr 16, 2026 10:49 pm I'm not vegan myself, nor vegetarian either but I can understand people liking certain meat flavours, but without the battery hen, pigfarm, corn fed steroid beef stuff.

Re: Labelling of stuff
This is correct, I've cut down on sugar and salt and now really taste both, sugar now has a big affect on me, I get anxious if I have too much of it after about 8 at night.Count Steer wrote: Thu Apr 16, 2026 9:44 am I think your palate adjusts eg having reduced my salt intake over time restaurant food and a lot of the pre-prepped meals now taste mouth-puckeringly salty.

Re: Labelling of stuff
?? By eating vegan food that may or may not have product descriptions that evoke meat-based tastes they are perpetuating 'the endless cycle of animal slaughter'? So to even use meat-based flavours in a descriptive sense is akin to animal murder?MrLongbeard wrote: Thu Apr 16, 2026 11:04 pm Yeah but by chasing the flavours they're just perpetrating the endless cycle of animal slaughter, their morals would be better served by getting folk away from liking the taste of flesh.

Trying discussing it with some proper militant vegans, the type that give up work and property and spend their lives protesting and volunteering to serve on the Sea Shepard fleet.mangocrazy wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:23 am?? I had the misfortune ti be on a residential course with one of those a few years ago. Every meal was sent back at least once, some 3 times. He was a PITA, and I shudder to think what he actually are after being sent back to the kitchen 3 times.MrLongbeard wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:32 amTrying discussing it with some proper militant vegans, the type that give up work and property and spend their lives protesting and volunteering to serve on the Sea Shepard fleet.mangocrazy wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:23 am?? I do know some who are not far of that level of fruitloop. Every conversation starts and ends at veganism.MrLongbeard wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:32 amTrying discussing it with some proper militant vegans, the type that give up work and property and spend their lives protesting and volunteering to serve on the Sea Shepard fleet.mangocrazy wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:23 am??
