Subscribe to Ride and Bike online. Been meaning to cancel but don't know how There are a few sections worth a read - the Ask a Lawyer and usually High Mileage Heroes (though some of them are not actually *that* high mileage). Wouldn't miss them. Each of them only has a few journos now whereas 25 years ago I seem to remember each title having 10-15 contributors which gave more diverse content.

I've never heard of that?, how does that work then? All online? no physical magazine I guess? Might be good on a tablet, rather than a computer.
I've been thinking about subbing to Readly too. Essentially it's an app where you get access to a shed load of mags for a fixed monthly fee of 12.99 a month, you can share that with up to 5 family members and it includes current issues and back issues. You can download stuff for offline use and it has everything from cake making, photography, newspapers and every bike and car mag under the sun. The Mrs could look at all the women's stuff, the kids get teen/comic stuff and I get bikes and cars. That way I don't mind if I only ready a couple of articles out of a mag and move on.

This lists all the mags they have

Not sure what Readly gives you for £12.99 a month that the Libby app and my area library services provides for free. Don't all regional library services do the same thing?

I can get papers and e-mags through PressReader too if I log in with my library card and PIN.

Haven't investigated fully but it all looks.

No idea, will take a look as I use the library a fair amount so sounds like I need to investigate as if it's free then sounds great.

I thought it looked a bit simple and assumed they'd gone for the 'make it so that even a non-technical old person can dab around and find stuff' approach. :D

I do wonder what the catch is - Readly would be out of business if it's the same! Maybe you have to check mags out and back in, ie you don't get to keep a downloaded copy or something. Will have a dab around tomorrow.

I think I have to wait for my registration to be confirmed before I can look at anything interesting!

I just had a quick look at a car mag and it appears I can check a mag out for 7 days, for most purposes that suits me fine, so I guess Readly does offer more but, tbh, I don't think I'd get the value from a subscription. This seems like a happy compromise for me.

@Mr Moofo did you already have an active library card? (Mine had elapsed as I hadn't used it for some time so I had to go in, show ID and they reactivated my account).

I haven't been a member of a library since I left university in 1982!

I don't seem to need to check the mag out as far as I can see if I'm online. I opened the latest issue of Ride and it said I had no loans etc. Not tried downloading anything though for offline.

I could open and read a mag without checking it out but it offered the option of checking it out (and adding it to my 'shelf') for 7 days. I'll have a longer dig around today.

I also think that I'll put the Libby app on my tablet as well as my phone - e-books and e-mags will be much easier to read on a bigger screen. :D

Ah. You'll need to register with your library services. Maybe that's what the delay is.

I have done - no wonder council tax increases so much each year. The inefficiency is impressive

Just signed up for a library card with my local council. I can't seem to work out how to get onto Pressreader using my library card? Looks like it's wanting me to subscribe and pay?

Haven't downloaded PressReader yet but I'm pretty sure you get free access*. On my library brochure it says 'select your county library group and login with your library card and PIN'.

I'm taking some books back today, I'll have a chat with a human about the various services while I'm there.

* it could be one of those things that you can only access using a library machine, ie in the library, but it doesn't imply that in the brochure. I know there are other services like Ancestry and Which? subscriptions too that I can access but that looks more complicated.

I just accessed PressReader via my library app and it took me in via Libby to get access to loads of papers - just browsed the WSJ. It gives me 30 days free access then I have to go through the same routine to get 30 more days*. Libby now shows I have 29 days remaining.

No app to download just uses Libby as the portal.

Different counties may have different services though. I'm using Surrey.

* I guess the library services get billed for each 30 day chunk.

More likely that the council has cut library services to the bone and it's run by volunteers. :(
