But this thread has reminded me of something that happened back when I was getting old. My son and I were in the car listening to some music on the wireless
I may be old, but I raised a music lover.
I'm still private health. I can go for the Spanish system for free, but not as good.Taipan wrote: Fri Oct 31, 2025 9:24 pmYou're over 60, why are you paying for prescriptions? Methinks your Spanish GP is El Grande Bandito!Yorick wrote: Fri Oct 31, 2025 1:05 pm Got 4 prescriptions this week.
2 for steroids
2 for Ramipril
Less than 10€ the lot.
Was in chemist less than 2 minutes. As soon as keyed in on screen, they come down a chute.![]()
I assume if it's a non-NHS prescription you pay the full price. I'd guess that will always be more than the standard charge. The antibiotics I was prescribed should be on the cheaper end - they've been around a long time and are probably made in India. £60+ was a bit of a surprise for 24 tabs.Mussels wrote: Fri Oct 31, 2025 9:13 pmI wouldn't expect that, does it mean prescriptions from a private GP don't cost the standard amount either? On the flip side if you are prescribed a cheap drug will it cost less than the standard charge?Count Steer wrote: Fri Oct 31, 2025 3:48 pm
The dentist recently prescribed me a 6 day course of antibiotics for a gum infection. Olde Worlde broad spectrum ones, nothing exotic. Took prescription to chemist. 'Oh that's a private prescription*, that'll be £60+ please'.![]()
* On one of those dental insurance schemes rather than NHS.
The cynic in me thinks the customer will always get the most expensive option.
No. That's when you are old.JackyJoll wrote: Sat Nov 01, 2025 7:48 am You know you’re getting old when you discuss your prescriptions.

They get easier. Although, since I can see to read and wander around, I tend not to wear them as much as I maybe should (I just don't recognise people at a distance
I thought with you being fussy about tea protocol n' schitt, you'd be using proper tea instead of council bags.Saga Lout wrote: Sun Nov 02, 2025 10:08 pm You've warmed the pot, you bring the kettle to the boil, you pour the boiling water from the kettle into the teapot...

It is proper tea. It's the same Assam tea they use for leaf tea, but in a handy, easy to use bag.Skub wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:33 amI thought with you being fussy about tea protocol n' schitt, you'd be using proper tea instead of council bags.Saga Lout wrote: Sun Nov 02, 2025 10:08 pm You've warmed the pot, you bring the kettle to the boil, you pour the boiling water from the kettle into the teapot...

I found I was constantly moving my head up and down to find the right bit that was in focus.Noggin wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:09 amThey get easier. Although, since I can see to read and wander around, I tend not to wear them as much as I maybe should (I just don't recognise people at a distance).
But as long as the distances are right they're great for driving (when the distances aren't right, I can't see the info on the dash)
Good luck, stick with them for a bit longer xx
I definitely want to try that next. I hate glasses in winter !!!Saga Lout wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 11:15 amI found I was constantly moving my head up and down to find the right bit that was in focus.Noggin wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:09 amThey get easier. However, multifocal contact lenses just work. (One lens for distance and one for near also works for many people.)
I've been rocking varifocals for about 6 years now, they are great!
