Here's a question for you then... If you run out of fuel and push your truck/car back home, what's your range before you get it (somehow) to a petrol station? And how much would it cost to fill up?
For our EV it's about 280 miles and a fiver.
Pros and cons, horses for courses, YMM(literally)V.
I don't need to push it. I can walk (or get a lift) to a petrol station and walk (or get a lift) back with a gallon of fuel. Try doing that with 5 kWh of electricity.

On a serious note, I was involved in research into fatal crashes. Several were as a result of running out of fuel*. The 'worst' was where they'd driven past a petrol station and conked out four miles on. Driver was walking back (as you were planning). Passenger was still in the car when it was hit.
* And in future, it will make no difference what fuels your vehicle.

I don't even need to do that, I just call AAA & a bloke shows up with fuel.

That's not what kills them here in the desert, it's the heat. They make it around a mile before collapsing & dying. It's so flat they can see the town in the distance & they set off in a straight line across the desert instead of following the roads.

Normal people in normal worlds don't do 2700 mile trips... It's just not a common thing and can't really be considered as anything more than a complete outlier.
My former B-i-L just did that drive last weekend to visit his daughters in-laws for Turkey Day. He's at an alligator farm today. I bet that journey cured him of Tacoma ownership, they're not designed for long trips & will damn near beat you to death if you're going over 50 miles or so.

Wonderful. Your lovely, clean, environmentally friendly, runs on sunbeams and unicorn farts EV needs a diesel engine to get it back on the road.
Yes, wonderful. For anyone who runs out. Which, as the research showed, isn't a great idea. I wonder whether any EV owners here push their luck on remaining range in the same way many ICE owners are happy to do, who think that not stopping to fill up deserves some sort of adulation.

99% of the time, I can wake up with a full battery of charge, absolutely no waiting time at all.
The 1% of longer journeys I do, for example from S Wales to Exeter. I will have a full battery to start, I then stop in Exeter for 20 mins to top up, I could probably get away 10, but 20 mins is fine. this gives me more than enough charge to get home.
I do this maybe once every 6-8 wks. 20 mins every 6-8 wks. meanwhile everyone who drives an ICE car (I include myself in that) has had to stop 2-3, maybe more time, 5 mins each time to fill with fuel.
So the time is the same or very similar, the charging time is irrelevant imo, all works out about the same, it's just that ours comes in one go rather than spread out over a period of time. If I didn't do any long journeys, I would NEVER have to wait for charge.
I popped in to our local esso an hour ago to get some cash. I haven’t been in their for ages and it struck me that I really really don’t miss calling in regularly to fill up.
Like you, I top up every night on the drive and on the rare occasion that I need to top up using a public charger it’s been no hassle at all.

Twice. Once in a Metro, it ran out of fuel before the whole of the needle was over the whole of the line. Swizz.
Once in a Transit. In France. I confused rest areas with services. Rest areas don't have fuel. I ran out before I found a nearby garage. A very kind Frenchman gave me a lift to and from the petrol station.

No. I did it once to see how accurate the Ford Sierra fuel gauge was. I stopped, took the petrol can from the boot and emptied it into the tank, then filled up at the petrol station a quarter of a mile down the road.
I thought if you ran a modern diesel out of fuel it was a bastard to get it going again once it had fuel in it again, with bleeding / priming required.

Older direct injection dervs often had a priming bulb to manually pump, but common rails usually self prime if there's enough battery power.

Apparently my 7.3 PS is a bugger, but I can take the top off the filter housing in the valley & fill it manually.
I think it was an AA man who told me that. Said he'd done one recently and it took over a half a tank of fuel and the battery hooked up to something and keep turning it over for ages to get it going again. I might have imagined it though. Or maybe there was something else wrong with it.
FWIW I think my many Prii are not to bad if they do run out of petrol.

From the Tesla owners POV I can say yes. I think they do it just to show you can go past 0% remaining charge? Also, some just CBA to stop, and want to get home to their own charger, even if its a granny charger to get enough in to get them back to a supercharger the next day? I sometimes get home on the bike with the low fuel light flashing as I'm too cold/CBA to go to the garage and then curse myself in the morning for not doing so!
