KTM Power Deals

Post by KungFooBob »

It's that time of year KTM fuckover existing owners by devaluing their bikes on the used market :)

https://www.ktm.com/en-gb/powerdeals/promotion.html

Can't see any amazing deals... unless you want a two year old Superduke 1290GT.

Not sure about the savings on the 990 Duke.

As an existing KTM owner, I am mildly surprised by just how little these deals are going to mess up the 2nd hand value of my bike!

Not that I'm looking to sell it mind... But given how far in the shit KTM are/were, I'm very surprised they haven't been literally giving them away given that many of these bikes are 3/4yr models now, and in the case of the SD 1290 GT, it's a 10yr old bike that had a facelift 7yrs ago and a new dash 4yrs ago...

There's a gaping great hole in their range where the 690 Duke used to sit. How long before KTM want to take back the single cylinder horsepower bragging rights trophy from Ducati...?

I still wish they had the Duke 890R in their range, That thing was a proper weapon.

You' are many, many months out of date already...

Admittedly, it's not hit the market yet because of all the shit KTM have been through, but they announced an updated 690 some time ago now...

Yeah that thing was SHARP! Arguably a bit too much to be honest... Which is why I think they softened it a little bit for the 990 I think.

Ah yes, I do vaguely recall hearing about the updated 690. Shame its SMC-R/Enduro only, they really should bring back the 690 Duke.

The 890R was KTM in its purest form, but I guess it didn't sell the required amount.

There's zero market for sporty singles any more... The Supermoto market has all but died off, the market for sporty single cylinder naked bikes is non-existent these days. The retro single market is booming, but for anything sporty people expect to have 2 cylinders or more these days... Emphasised when KTM's own 790 Duke undercut the 690 when it was launched, with 30bhp more and a lot more tech, a sharper chassis, and only about 15kg more weight.

Most would consider me a pretty hardcore KTM fan... I'm not sure that I bleed orange, but KTM is certainly a drug that I need my fix of every so often... I went to test ride a Duke 890R absolutely certain that I was going to buy it... And honestly, it was just too focussed! It had absolutely zero chill... As a bike to grab by the scruff of the neck and kick the shit out of for an hour on a Sunday morning, or even take on track and duff up the 1000cc boys in the corners, it is almost without parallel I'd say. But whilst that appeals, I needed something that was capable of making me feel a million dollars when I was kicking its head in, but that would also chill with the best of them too... And that's how I ended up with my Indian FTR 1200!

Agree about the market for sporty singles - it's virtually non-existent. Not sure about your figures for the 690 vs. the 790; the 790 was markedly heavier and generally bigger all round. The 790 was listed as 170kg dry; the 690 Duke was listed as 147.5kg dry - that's 22.5kg difference, not 15kg. I remember sitting on the 790 at the 2017 NEC show and doing a back to back comparison with the 690, and promptly placed an order for one of the last Duke 690R models.

I've never regretted my decision... :)

Take your point about the 890R - I've never ridden one and was just going on the road tests. But they do absolutely look the biz...

I took a tape measure with me (yes, really, no scales though so was only quoting roughly from a distant memory) to measure up the difference between a 690 and 790 Duke only a year or so after the 790 had come out, as I was looking at either, to be able to stick in the back of my van and take with me when working away...

Didn't end up buying either, but the overwhelming memory was just what a job they'd done of packaging everything into the 790 as though it was bigger, it wasn't much bigger in any single dimension... Not enough to have made a difference getting it in and out of a van anyway... Obviously it was a little wider between the legs, but still pretty minimal.

The first 790 was a game changer for me, it was and probably still is an amazing bike, road, track, back lanes, fast bits, slow bits, just an incredible machine.
The 690 in it's later generation with TC and full electronics, well again, that was just an incredible machine too. I don't think i'm using rose tinted glasses too much, but yeah for me, it was just awesome.

The SMC-R i really wanted to love, but loved it just a bit less, despite the riding position being theoretically better for me... It just didn't quite hit the spot in the same way.

TBH i don't understand why anyone owns anything bigger or more powerful than either of these nowdays, with the roads, traffic, cars, potholes, etc... But the market seems to disagree with me

I think that they were much more successful in doing that because of the quality control issues of recent years, and looking like the company would go under, taking all dealer support and much of the parts support with them.

That said, I regret selling my 1190 adventure and would rather like another one, or a 1290.

For sure… I’ve contemplated going back to one several times myself! I think if my GF never came pillion, I’d have gone back to one by now… The moment I sold mine and bought a 1200 GS, I knew I’d make a huge mistake, and was back on KTM within 6 months albeit a 1290 Super Adventure, and am on my 2nd of those now too… The Super Adventure is just a touch more approachable, with its milder cams and greater creature comforts, but still an animal in its own right.

I’ve got an overriding memory from my SDGT that I’ve told to anyone who’ll listen, but one day I was out on it coming back from a meet with friends, on a twisty road I knew well, when I came up behind a BMW M3 that as I got closer sounded pretty tasty, and I realised it had been caged and track prepped too… He saw me in his mirrors and dropped down a year and off he went… Kept with him through the next few bends before the road opened up, whereupon I short shifted from 2nd to 3rd after the corner exit then gunned it past him… As I went past him I snicked 4th before hitting the limiter as the bike pulled an epic power wheelie involuntarily too! 😂

A 4th gear power wheelie… On a touring bike! 😂 It was insane!!!

By Christ I had some issues with the electronic preload adjuster on that bike though, it went back 4 times under warranty before it seemed to finally be fixed! Haven’t had the same issues on the Super Adventures to be fair, and I understand it’s not an issue on the newer SDGT’s either really, more a 1st generation problem.

They had 20,000 2023 and 2024 bikes to shift last spring when they went under. I suspect prices will be 'negotiable' for quite a while.

Incidentally, they hardly built a single '2025' bike because production lines were at a standstill for much of the year.

Almost all of it was off road bikes though... Good news for @Yorick potentially!

I got the figure wrong... 265 THOUSAND unsold bikes.

Did think your figure looked a little low at first...

That is a global figure though... They were making upwards of 400k bikes per year at their height, 7 months worth of overstock and no wonder they were in the shit!

Quick sums with an average sale value of say 6k euros (value to KTM rather than retailer), and that means they had 1.6Bn Euro's worth of unsold inventory!!!

Which is still only 1/2 of what they owed their suppliers!!!

I think the small singles built by Bajaj in India were pretty much sold as they were made. Dunno about the Chinese-built bikes, but certainly the Austrian production line was massively overproducing.

Hard to see how they didn't see a couple of years earlier they were in difficulty. Maybe they did - it would explain the desperation to build a platform every 100cc then turn each into several different bikes!

Husqvarna have jumped on the discount wagon too - If I was looking for a middleweight naked twin I would have a hard time not choosing this:
