A set of paint pens even cheaper.

(I have both, the dymo doesn't get a lot of use since I bought the paint pens....)

So we're back to the start of the season and back to 'what now' for the toolbox stuff.

Since fitting the corner brackets it's been pretty solid i have to admit, although counter to that, i don't exactly love it lol. But it's good enough for sure.
The layout though taught me there's loads of things i have in there i want and loads i don't... along with that, some of them are in the wrong places and layers... so i've got a few things to move, change, swap.

Thats a constant battle for me, powertools in the van are pretty much constant but the handtools I need change from job to job and as soon as I put an infrequently used item like Glass Suckers away in the bottom tool box I get a job that needs em.

Get a decent sized board and layout all your tools and draw round them. Add nails screws to hold them in place.

Chuck everything into a big box.

At each race meeting spend 5 mins putting each tool in place.
Then you have everything you might need all weekend in handy, easy reach place.

Got a hard plastic case today that's much better for the job. It's slightly bigger so a bit more space in there too.

Only downside is that the lid doesn't 'stop' around vertical, so i may need to employ the brackets i had from the old one for the job, either that i when it's open it's fully open. Not sure yet. It does have 'stops' in the moulding which means it doesn't go completely past flat, so i could modify that to stop just past vertical.... Not sure yet what will be the perfect plan.

First layup of the tools to go in...

Next debate is whether i used Red Box Tools and have all the items precision scanned/cut into their foam or whether i use some shadowfoam i have for the job... Setup and cutting out is about £125 including the foam.

It's the quest for the perfect solution to a problem most of us decided had no perfect solution many years ago.

I tried to rationalise my tools into categories like 'plumbing', 'electrical', 'mechanical' so many times before realising that only a % are specific the rest cross categories so either you end up going 'Which lot are the big pliers in?' or buying a pair of big pliers for each lot.

At least this is focused on one task - keeping a bicycle going - so I watch in hope that someone finally nails it.

If he was really dedicated he'd change bits on the bike to reduce the number of tools needed

Mercedes F1 (and presumably others, Merc is the only one I have direct knowledge of) make some custom fasteners for that very reason.

Competition enduro bikes are built that way as they have to be fixable on the course or in a ten minute window at the end of the day. Honda XR models used to come a couple of tools that fitted all the bolts.

Modern KTM enduros are the same.

Yup. Same on my GasGas

Getting there. May need a few tiny little trims to make sure things are secure. But it's pretty damn close.
